A Guide to NEW NESIC/NASIOC members!
Welcome NASIOC (North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club) and our region NESIC (New England Subaru Impreza Club). This primer should give you a great start to look more intelligent than the average n00b coming to our fine forum. Please take the time to read all of this and click all of the links.
Where are meets? We have a great sticky with meet thread links: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2401590 What should be my first mod, car, wife, house? 2 links here. One is Unabomber's manifesto. Unlike the original manifesto (for those old enough to know who Ted Kaczynski was), this is chock full of great information. Heck...I look in it to see what exhaust fits other cars. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787 The next is a guide for questions that we simply can't answer. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=718033 We have a complete FAQ and listing of a bunch of other questions that everyone should know the answer to before posting a bunch of stuff here: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170789 Maybe you're at the point where you want elevendy bazillion horsepower. Well, here's a listing of local tuners who will be happy to take your $75,000,000 to achieve this: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2485344 But also realize that maybe there's more to getting elevendy bazillion horsepower than turning up the boost to 100 and holding on: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1393580 Some basics without links There's a sticky here for getting yourself a nasioc or nesic sticker. Search for it, please. There is a listing of nasioc rules. Here's your homework. Find them and read them. If you have a Subaru mastercard and a hand full of subybucks that you'll never use.....too bad. You can't buy or sell them on nasioc anywhere. They're in your name and most reputable subaru dealers will require id to show that they're yours when they're used. If you buy them from someone else, expect that they are worth the 0.002 cents that it cost to print. Don't start a petition thread. They are useless and do nothing but annoy the moderators. If you do something wrong and get a warning or points from a moderator, take them like you're not 6. If you don't understand why you got them, send a pm to the moderator and ask respectfully why you got them and start your pm with "I'm sorry". Remember that this is NOT a public forum. It's a privately owned one and we've decided that the 1st ammendment is stupid and so we don't give you the right to free speach. Don't like it? Go somewhere else. Titles: You're a newbie till you have 555 posts. Why? Search. 5000 and you're a specialist and some other big number and you're a guru. Does it really matter to you? Please say no. Also know that moderators can hard code your title to forever say scooby newbie.....so you 800,000 posts won't help. Posts in OT don't count. Searching: First, do it. Second, use google site:nasioc and your question. Works better than our search. Next, if you have a question that you think would have been asked a million times and don't find the answer in a search, go to the General: newbies and FAQ section and post it there. People are nicer there. If they're not nicer, report them rather than getting into a big online argument and getting yourself pointed. Buying and selling: You're on your own. Don't let the moderators see your name on ads more than twice or we'll likely delete your ad. Don't bump your ad more than once a day or we may delete all of your bumps and you end up on page 932 of the classifieds. Don't put the ad in more than one region. You can put it in one region plus the site wide classifieds. In site wide, read the rules. Everywhere....read the rules. If you get ripped off, go to the for sale thread, put your story of being ripped off with any paypal/receipt info in an image with id stuff blocked out and report it asking that the person be put into scammer central. We can't get your money back if you're stupid. If you send anything moneygram or western union or wire transfer, then by definition, you are stupid. Posting images: Go put your picture somewhere on line first. Photobucket, Image Shack, heck....Strat-Talk or a bazillion other places. Then copy the image tag that will look like [img] then some long url link [/img]. Put your own stuff up. If you hotlink (you found that cool car on google images) and the owner changes the picture in the link to the ta-tas of the latest 18 year old, we consider it your responsibility. Don't be banned because you didn't first save the picture in your own photobucket. Do you want to have a meet, garage day, convoy to Lime Rock for ALMS? Think it through first. Search next (someone else may be doing what you want). If you think it's a good idea and you're willing to do the planning and have permission to use a lot or a garage.....Post it up as a meet with the day you propose and any details. When I started in nasioc back in the olden days, I knew nobody, so held a garage day. To this day, other members know what my driveway and garage look like. Just don't plan a meet in an MBTA parking lot without their permission or in the Natick Mall parking lot top floor without their permission. Don't link facebook anything without cutting/pasting the info here. Some people (me) are blocked from facebook. If I can't verify the link, I assume it's porn and will immediately delete it. Put it up again and you're taking a vacation from nasioc. Don't offer your business services if you are not a nasioc vendor. You can offer your advice. If you're the worlds best bodywork guy, you can tell people how to smooth in molded fender flares, but you can't put a link to your business or tell people that you'll do this for them. If you become a nasioc vendor, there are other restrictions. Email [email protected] to become a vendor. Charity threads: You must first pass your request through moderator Paisan. If he approves, you can post it. If it's not approved.....no. We are deluged with charity stuff from everyone. They may be worthy, but we're not the United Way. Heck.....if we were, I'd be making half a mil a year, right? Motorsports: We have a huge variety of motorsports activities available in the region. From autocross, time trial, HPDE (high performance driver education), wheel to wheel, ice racing, karting, rally-X, even (gulp) drifting events. Here's just a few: Track: Time Trial: COM Sports Car Club runs schools and time trials at various tracks. NHMS is pretty much the home track. http://www.comscc.org/ BMW CCA runs schools through both the Boston and White Mountain chapters mainly at NHMS but also up in Canada on occation along with BMW CCC. http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/ http://www.wmc-bmwcca.org/ SCDA is a private organization running all over the Northeast. One of the best chances to run at Lime Rock is with them. http://www.scda1.com/ CART: various venue auto events: http://www.cartct.com/ NASA is a nationwide wheel to wheel racing organization. http://www.nasaproracing.com/ SCCA does everything auto sport related: http://www.scca.com/ some good track info from KFoote http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...light=hot+laps Autocross See both White Mt and Boston BMW CCA a few autocross/rally/race links: http://www.ner.org | New England Region Sports Car Club of America http://sccv.org | Sports Car Club of Vermont (all it is a forum right now, includes ice racing on lake champlain) http://www.sccnh.org | Sports Car Club of New Hampshire http://www.hillclimb.org | New England Hill Climb Rally-X Ice Racing Winters, see BMW clubs again www.icerace.com Drifting need links To answer some questions. No, you can't bring your mad tyte modded STi to the track and just go out and drive. You'll get in-car instruction with all the track organizations. If you listen to your instructor, you will pick up a good 14 seconds a lap on an average 1.5 mile roadcourse over what you would have done by yourself. Mods do not amuse or impress instructors. Most instructors have pretty much seen it all and, well, we all rode with Raj and survived. You will have fun. You will be humbled. There is insurance commercially sold to protect your car on the track. Most states won't cover your car on the track with your normal road insurance. Autocross is a bunch of cones randomly set up in order to get you lost. Your task is to first figure out the course, then to go faster than the rest of those lost on the course. Your run against the clock. Cars are a far smaller factor here than your ability. Back in the olden days, I ran an E30 M3 and took fastest BMW of the year. The second fastest car (besides an open wheel Lotus) was a 95 Neon ACR driven by a very experienced SCCA racer. I'll leave this open for suggestions for a bit to add to this, then I'll do my thing and delete all the comments and lock the thread. This will become a sticky.
