Default Spoiler Lamp

Well, I got back to school this fall, and was hanging out at my old house and found my WRX spoiler from my 04 WRX. I got into an accident just over a year ago, and the car was totaled, but I still had my spoiler from when I swapped to an STi wing.

I decided to turn this spoiler into a lamp for my room as all I have right now is a ****ty overhead light.

First took the spoiler to my lab at school and hooked it up to a DC power source. It liked operating at 12.5 - 13.25 volts the best and pulled about 75mA of current.

Knowing this, I knew what I had to build to send power to it. I needed a full bridge rectifier to turn AC to DC, but how to step down from 120 to 12 - 13 volts?

What I did was went to good will and found an old telephone with a plug that has a built in xfmr and bridge built right inside it. After that I just cut the end off and hooked the two sides into the connection on the spoiler. This worked just fine, so now it was time to accessorize. I added a 12V 15A marine switch from napa to the hot side of the circuit and was pretty much done.

Enough rambling, time for pictures.

Sitting on the wall ( I know it's not level lol - thats a work in progress )

Light output ( enough to see and walk around when completely dark.

Figured out the power, and it should use about 1 kilowatt of energy for ever 100 hours on. Or like 2 cents every fifteen hours. give or take.

All in all, cost me about 6 dollars to do this. Pretty fun way to spend 2 hours when I should have been doing homework.

Well, I would have tried to, but the previous owner of the car did something to this day I haven't found out why...

He had the spoiler siliconed to the trunk, so when I tried to remove it, there was silicone everywhere and actually cracked the bottom of the spoiler in the process. I wouldn't feel right trying to sell a spoiler on here in that condition. I'd save shady moves like that for craigs list
