It's one of the first things my Dealer told me about when I sat in the car. So it didn't catch me, on this car... However in a previous life I owned a 1971 Renault R10 that had a rocker switch on the bottom of the steering column that I'd hit with my knee without knowing it. It turned a left or right side marker light on depending on which way your knee hit it. It took me forever to figure that one out.

This got me too!
I thought I had read the owners manual pretty well on my '02 WRX Sport Wagon but I guess not well enough. Took it to a car wash and they turned the lights on and I didn't realize it. We were having a party and one of my friends (who is a mechanic!) asked me why my parking lights were on. As you can imagine every guy who was here had an opinion but no answers. I finally said the hell with this and disconnected the battery, which was dead enough that it wouldn’t crank the motor but would allow the lights to still shine nice and bright. The general consensus was that the battery couldn't be dead because the lights were still on. WRONG!!!
So after I went into cyberspace and found this great forum I had to give myself a swift kick in the ego when I saw the post about the parking light situation. What a dumb a$$ I am. But thanks to all you posters that saved me the humiliation of towing my car to the dealer. I stand humbled yet grateful for your wisdom! |

parking lights and DRLs
I am in Canada with an STi soon to be modified with projector HIDs. I have followed the threads about taking out the DRL module but up here "it's the law" to have DRLs. Does anyone know if there is enough voltage in the parking light circuit to mount something brighter in that corner light? It would mean remembering to turn off the "parking lights" or wire to the ignition somehow.
thanks. |

You know what I find really funny? That switch doesn't even do anything on my car. I confirmed it when I took the plastic off the column and there are no wires attached to that switch. Obviously the previous owners had a problem with that switch.

This is actually quite useful feature. I use it whenever I park at non-standard spaces (side of buildings, front of library, school etc). Hazard light attracts too much attention including that from popo and meter maids. It's most effective at night, when I have to park it for a short time. Passer-bys think someone is in vehicle.

OK, i want to know how to disconnect this stupid switch, if you leave it on, the car does nothing to warn you as far as beeping or what have you. It's not bright enought to get your attention when you are walking away to notice that you left them on. I just don't understand the point of them.

Every time I take my car to get washed, they flip the switch. I used to live in Chicago and was doing delivery driving with it and used my hazard lights plenty. With the DRLs and the hazard lights, and the semi-hidden location of the switch, it's just asking for people to drain their batteries because someone else flipped it.

Man, I spent hours trying to figure out why my courtesy car lights wouldn't shut off. I was getting a little frustrated...then I saw this post. Thanks.
Oh, no manual in the car, so RTFM was not an option. |

Has anyone modded this switch to do something else? I don't know about you guys, but in the last two years I have owned the car, the only time I have used this switch was to turn it off when the car wash guy turns it on by accident.

The actual reason for the PARK light switch is really quite good it's just a case of NO ONE uses it.
Yes, the headlights on our cars are auto off so we don't live them running when we PARK our cars. PARK lights are designed to be left on when the car is parked on a side street where there is a risk someone may not see your vehicle and collide with it. If the PARK lights are on then the vehicle is much more noticeable. This is good when you are double parked for a short time Now if there were called CORNERING lamps or anything else...then yes it would be a redundant and totally stupid feature. |

all of my outer lights minus the headlights and foglights are LED. I can leave the parking lights on all night and it doesn't phase the battery as well as the dome light.

you could replace all your parking lights with LED's and not have a dead battery when you wake up in the morning if you leave them on all night accidentally.

It is actually a Law in a couple borughs in Louisiana that you must be able to turn on your parking lights when the car is off and the Key is out. Other than that, I am not sure of any other reasons
