- On Sunday pulled 2 steering shaft U-joints at Crazy Ray's, as the beater Impreza had some binding in the steering and it was suggested on corner-carvers.com that it might be the U-joint. (Ball joints and outer tie rods are < 15 months old, rack was replaced by previous owner, so it's pretty new, too.) First one I pulled off a car felt like it was starting to wear out, so I went and found another; that one felt nice and smooooth.
- This evening, braved the cold and wind and dark out in my driveway to swap out the U-joint. I yanked the steering wheel to one side to get it to lock, so that I could (hopefully) keep the rack and steering shaft in the same position and thus not have the steering wheel out of whack once I was done. I couldn't quite get the U-joint to come off the rack input initially - I pushed the U-joint back up the splines (towards the firewall) as far as it would go, but the lower splines were still slightly hung up on the rack input. At that point I resorted to what I had done to get the donor parts off in the junkyard - I unbolted the steering column from the dash beam to allow the column to hang. That gave more play in the whole assembly, and allowed me to pretty easily get the U-joint off the rack input and the steering shaft. Of course, that also introduced more uncertainty when it came time to put the "new" U-joint on, but I'm fairly sure I got it back on correctly. (Thus far I only backed the car out of the driveway, so I haven't really driven it yet. I'm about to head out for groceries and it will be readily apparent if the steering wheel is off about 20deg. ) The old U-joint that came off the car has one pivot that is quite stiff, so it appears the internet diagnosis / suggestion was correct. Edit: Damn, off a spline, so I get to do it all again. Last edited by Patrick Olsen; 03-14-2018 at 10:41 PM. |

- Based on the steering wheel position, I decided I was off 2 splines, and I figured that was 1 at the rack input and 1 at the steering shaft. Took the car to the Fort Myer auto hobby shop after work, unbolted the U-joint at each end, and successfully shifted it to the correct position. (I probably could've done it at home, but I went to the hobby shop so I could have someone else hold the steering wheel while I moved the U-joint, just to be sure I got it right.)
It's a heckuva lot easier to remove/reinstall that U-joint when (1) it's not semi-rusted in place, and (2) doesn't have one pivot almost frozen solid! Last edited by Patrick Olsen; 03-16-2018 at 11:41 AM. |

What did you really do to your car today? V3.1
Picked up an Invidia divided catless downpipe off of a local on Craigslist. Wrapped it up and bolted on after making a reducer/adapter.

Yeah, stock exhaust after the pipe. And it is still pretty quiet. Can hear turbo spool now and a light rumble is noticeable. Which I like because I don’t like loud exhaust. Low end has definitely kicked up some. Spools up quicker. It cruises at lower rpm easier. Doesn’t feel like it’s bogging below 2k cruising around town. I can’t tell how much of a difference overall it’s making yet. I ran a log after install and I’m only getting 79% throttle input at wide open. After I change the TPS I’ll get a better feel for it. I should mention that the uppipe was already de-catted, has a lightweight flywheel, tgv delete, and a mild tune on an ej208 longblock. So it wasn’t a slouch before. Aside from being able to hear the turbo spool, it definitely made a noticeable response/power difference. |

Edit: Added the pic. The switch was just big enough that I was pretty sure if I tried to put the appropriate size hole in the "blank", that the blank would've snapped in half. So, I elected to just drill into the center console. And yes, I intentionally installed the switch at an angle, since that orients it correctly when viewed from my driving position. Tried it out Friday night, works great. Definitely doesn't warm up as quickly as the factory seat heater in my CTS-V, but once it gets going it's nice and toasty. Hey guys its been YEARS since I posted on this. Recently built the lower end of my 2015 sti limited. Pistons rods bearings. Just getting around my 1k break in for the motor, I'm pulling parts together to put on for the tune. Today I put on the Grimmspeed intake and box and flashed the stage 1+ on the V3. Till tune. |

Earlier I drove down to Andrewtech to pick up heads from being rebuilt. Just gotta order headgaskets and I can slap the heads on my spare shortblock and get my spare engine fully assembled.
Currently working on sanding and painting a fender for my sedan while it's nice out.....and later I will continue transferring my Cobb tune over to the Carberry rom. |

Powered up the electronics for the first time since July. I stripped the car to a bare shell and have been completely rebuilding it, made a new wiring harness, added lots of new things, and have been rebuilding the car back-to-front.
I was happy to see everything powered up on the first try! Keyless entry works, DCCDpro cluster interface and OEM controls works, TEIN EDFC works, Zeitronix ethanol analyzer, etc all good to go! Dropping engine in this weekend hopefully |

Old, paint-pen-painted Impreza latch on the right, "new" Rustoleum-painted Legacy button on the right: I think the Rustoleum color is a pretty damn good match for what the latches are supposed to be. I did consider doing another color - yellow? blue? green? - but elected to stick with red. We'll see how well the paint holds up to the metal latch hitting it over and over. |

I just installed this beauty:
TurboXS catted J-pipe, Perrin resonated cat-back, polyurethane exhaust mounts, and Cobb OTS 91 Stage 2 v301 tune (restrictor pill removed). To prepare for it I have previously installed the Perrin pitch stop mount brace and the Mishimoto dual catch can kit. I'm happy, but I'm also exhausted and filthy. I need a shower and bed... |
