When my 1990 Legacy is at idle the engine idles around 500-600RPMs and the whole car shakes a little but if i put the tranny in N and i give it some gas till its around 1500RPMs it stops shaking and all. what could it be?

sounds like a misfire at idle. check and see if it is running rich or lean. if it seems to be rich, check things like plugs, wires, etc... if it seems to be running lean, check for vacuum leak or something along those lines

+1 for plugs and wires.

Mine felt similar until I had another plug go (so I was running on 2 cylinders).

Yeah, the plugs were shot, and the car felt like crap until it warmed up. It was getting so bad, that it would backfire like a mother during acceleration.

we just got the plugs and wires replaced like 2,000 miles ago and when i went to look at them (maybe a week or so ago when she began to sputter in a country road in the middle of no where) and they were all black and the wires are supposed to be red so. that could probably be the problem then since everyones saying to replace them so i shall do that
