Not enough, you would need to be at 2 1/2qts per change, assuming 7500 interval

Still going to do the consumption test regardless...especially since SOA is paying for my next oil change to perform the test

My 2012 has burned about 2 quarts in 4500 miles so far under the Subaru oil consumption test I've been undergoing. They called me today to schedule the piston rings replacement under warranty for next week. Expected to take 3-4 days. Hope this fixes the issue completely.

Yes, the mileage is 5500. Not sure of the build month, but we took delivery in January of this year, so it was probably a Dec 2013 build.

You sure you want them to go that route? It was just posted above that the ring replacement isn't a 100% fix and that SOA is recommending shortblock replacement...

Build date is printed on the sticker on the driver side door frame.

The build date is November 2013. I can also confirm that a failed oil consumption test is 1/3 qt or more within 1200 miles.

So why does Subaru say burning 1qt of oil / 1200 miles is considered normal, but when doing a consumption test, only burning 1/3 qt is considered excessive? That doesn't make sense

They've wised up and realized that threshold was ridiculous.

With 1 qt in 1200, your replacing more oil during an OCI than the crankcase takes to fill up. They've also changed the recommended interval to 5k.

Really? I hadn't heard of the oci change to 5k.

Regardless, my UOAs show that my oil is good for 7.5k.

I'm sure it's all 'recommended', but that's what my dealer said when I went in @3k for my first change and they had me come in @8k.

My lazy ass just sent out my oil for analysis on that last change, and I'm hoping they say it's good to go the 7500, and I'll change it @15k to get back on schedule.

Are you a 5MT or CVT?

Its a manual, my wife doesn't know how to drive an automatic. :-)

I say that in jest, but its true that she has never driven an automatic. She actually called the dealer and tried to have them give her a manual rental when her short block is being replaced. I told her that wasn't likely. Worse case, I drive the rental and she takes my car for the week.

Just out of curiosity...isn't over-filling your oil reservoir bad for gas mileage/performance?

Fuel economy/performance isn't the primary concern that I've heard of. If the oil level is too high, it can cause the oil to foam which decreases its lubrication capabilities. But I'm sure that even if Subaru technicians are being told to "overfill", they aren't overfilling to the point that oil foaming would occur, because that would be disastrous to the engine.

It still seems like the MT cars have more problems than the CVT when it comes to the consumption.

Could be one's driving habits...maybe a manual drive=sportier driving where as a CVT yields daily driver...

Just a thought. My 2012 CVT is certainly consuming.

It's funny that people are trying to find correlations for oil consumption. Subaru obviously doesn't know/can't fix what is causing oil consumption, how are you going to figure it out?
Correlation /= Causation

And my 2012 5mt Impreza is not consuming.

Definitely not the case with us. This is my wife's car and she shifts before 3000rpm every time. Maybe more engine braking? Who knows, but hopefully this short block replacement next week will fix our oil consumption and increase our gas mileage.

I regret to report that I sold my Subaru to Carmax yesterday. I just don't have any faith in the longevity of my particular Impreza.

Best of luck to all of you with the oil consumption issue, I will continue to monitor this thread in the event that Subaru resolves the issue permanently and will kick myself later, but am also looking forward to my next vehicle!

I have since purchased a used 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS - V6 AWD w/62k on it.
