Default Looking for the right tuner in Phoenix area.

Hey guys,

Running just an Invidia catted downpipe, Borla CBE, Cobb SF, and Stage 2 SF+ 91 ACN Cobb AP map.
Now looking to get a protune. I've looked at Dynocomp, Goodspeed, and FAT. Just want to hear some feedback on your guy's protunes from the different tuners.

You have a very common/mild setup. Any of those places will be able to tune that easily. Just call them and see who can fit you in the earliest.

I called Goodspeed and they have convinced me to really think about their custom fuel rail kit and fuel pump. He said fuel is strongly recommended

For a Stage 2? I don't think that's really needed but that's just me.

I've had Travis from Snail / FAT tune both of my subarus. Never had a problem, car makes great power and is reliable at that power level urging time attack and time trial runs.

For a stage 2 with 91, you'll be fine with the stock fuel setup. Now if you move onto E85 you'll want to upgrade the injectors. The 91 down here sucks ass, so I wouldn't want anyone trying to push huge numbers on it. I would just go with a nice conservative tune if I was on 91.

What do you guys think about upgrading EBCS for the protune? I hear its a good thing to have regardless

Sounds like they are trying to up-sale you for a simple stage 2 tune...

That is of course assuming you didn't tell them you were planning on doing additional mods in the future.

I've never had a problem with Goodspeed trying to sell me things I don't need so this just sounds weird. They do recommend supporting mods you should get if you plan on doing X, Y, or Z to your car though.

EBCS is always a good upgrade imo, but for your conservative stage 2 tune, it's not absolutely necessary. If you plan to already get it in the future, you might as well get it now so as to save yourself from having to go back for another tune.

I think you need to have solid goals in mind prior to talking tune. It sounds to me like goodspeed is trying to sell you stuff you don't want or didn't say that you did. If all you want is a tune for your setup(which is fine from what I know) then why try to sell you other stuff. Now if they can justify it fine, but I'd call around and see what other shops say as well. Both FAT and DC have good reviews, GS I've actually read some bad ones lately.

YMMV but I go to FAT/Snail

Just my 2 cents but if you do decide to get a EBCS check out HEI TEK industrial automation solutions in phx. I got a 3 port ebcs from them for only like 20 bucks! My tunner at vivid told me about them. Works great! Helps control higher numbers of boost. Sounds sweeeet as well.

It's never a bad idea to do a pump and fuel rails. I got a Walbro 255 and Boomba Racing fuel rails before I got my stage 2 tune. Reason I did so was because of all the stuff you hear about cylinder 4 leaning out because it is the last injector to get fuel. With a set of aftermarket rails you can just parallel the fuel lines and never have to worry about it again. I can understand why they would recommend it. I've never ran into a situation where Goodspeed was trying to up-sell me or any of my friends. Joe is just really upfront about things and may tell you that he would prefer you to do x and y before getting a tune to maximize your setup. They wouldn't even put my car on the dyno until I got my oil pressure, fuel pressure, and EGT gauges installed (granted I have a really extreme setup).

Even if you do the rails/pump the most important thing is going to be the heat. Honestly I'd rather run a stock intake or a true CAI+heat wrapping or ceramic coating on the headers and using a turbo blanket, and upgrading the intercooler to something better. You can find used MRT or APS top mounts for as low as $250 and they will be worlds better than the stock one. If you do choose to stick with the stocker see if you can add some heat reflective tape and a better intercooler splitter. Lower temps = happier car.

simple setup. figure out your end goals. stg2 on an sti is all the more most people really do.

Yep. Good old Boomba Racing in Schaumburg. I used to live in NW Indiana so we used plenty of Boomba stuff. Great products for the price.

I'm afraid you're mistaken, Cyl 4 is not the last. I'm not completely sure without looking at the stock fuel rails again, but i know it's not #4.

The issue with Cylinder 4 is, Subaru specifically runs it a little leaner, and with more advance. The knock sensor is directly over that cylinder, and i think that Subaru figures if that one knocks, there will soon be knock at the others.

Check out Clark Turner tuning. Either search on Nasioc or Google. He's here in the valley. He works on his own but also does work at Goodspeed.

I maybe wrong but I think he mostly tunes with Cobb AP and I think he also has a long relationship with subaru. Also does etunes. Shoot him an email and he'll discuss your needs.

I may be wrong on that. It's been about 3.5 years since I've looked at stock rails on an STi. That was just what I was told when I went to aftermarket rails back then.

Everyone has there own opinions when it comes to tuners n this area. Honestly all 3 places you mentioned would be great places to get tunes at. They are the 3 largest and most reputable subie shops in the area. Some people like 1 place more then others and Im sure evryone has there own reason why 1 shop is better then the rest or why they would never go to 1 shop over the others. Its all up to you. Your best bet is to go talk to each shops tuner, tell them what you want and see what they say. Based on the feeling you get and info you get from each tuner see who your going to be able to build the best relationship with and use them for your tuning. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Goodspeed recommending a fuel upgrade is not an upsale at all. It seems the reason for the recommendation was not made clear however. On newer STIs I always recommend a Fuel pressure regulator and line modification. The newer STI has a jubumble of a regulator setup on it. It was done to "mimmick" a stock parallel fuel system, when in reality it created a problem. At stock tune levels it is not noticeable, but with upgrades and a tune you will notice a nasty hesitation at around 2600. Eliminating this fuel system is a great step. Goodspeed from what I have seen simply has their own way of modifying the system and works just fine. If you ever feel you are being upsold dont hesitate to ask the shop, or ask me. Its what we are here for. I will tell you how it is even if your question is in regards to another shops recommendation good or bad. They do great work, dynocomp does great work, as do we. shop around.

If you're trying to fix the GR stumble, follow this:

Fuel Line Extension / Stumble Fix Mod

And a quote of why this fixes the problem:

"The simplest solution is actually extending the fuel line as I'm doing. It seems like this solution (and the 100% success rate it has so far) has just come up on here, nasioc and romraider in the past month or so.

It turns out that the problem is caused by a resonance wave (or standing wave, I'm not sure I'm using the correct term) in the fuel line at certain RPMs, for larger-than stock injectors. I believe there's also load compensation data in the stock tune indicating Subaru has done work to tune around the mechanical issue. Doubling the size of the injectors means you and I are making the mechanical problem way worse and therefore, way harder to tune around (which is what a lot of people have been working on for a while.)"

You can go through the threads and do your own research, but from what I gather doing this simple $3-$10 dollar mod yourself doesn't really fix the stumble, but moves it from the 2500-3000 rpm range to beyond the 7k rpm range, which of course means it's gone unless you're upping your redline. Also, it seems everyone doing this reports this works so I would save money on a whole new fuel rail/FPR setup unless you're trying to go for massive power. Pays to do some research on your own, but hopefully this helps people make their own choices of whether or not they need a whole new fuel setup for the GR stumble.
