PWN3D My terrible commute - OR - Why everyone needs a skidplate

Just in case you all want to feel a little better about your commutes today, read on:

So, driving home, minding my own business in the left lane of three, when I see a bunch of brake lights immediately ahead. I slow down and notice that a hand truck dolly thing has fallen off of some sort of delivery truck and is lying in the middle of the middle lane. The unfortunate gigantic Ford truck behind the delivery truck clobbers said hand truck and turns it into a pile of scrap... (truck appeared to be unharmed, but I didn't pay much attention, because...)

Unfortunately for me, when the truck clobbered it, the axle on the dolly popped off as one single unit and rolled into -- wait for it! -- my lane!!! Now I'm pretty good at avoiding things, but here's this hand-truck axle rolling straight in the middle of my lane, and I have nowhere to go left except into a ditch (no median), and only the big truck on the right of me. And, I figure better to hit it head-on than to either side. I slow down as much as I can without getting rear-ended by the SUV behind me, and clobber the axle with both wheels attached.

Cue bad grinding noise.

I dart across both lanes and pull over to the right. Some guy thinks about stopping behind me, slows down and pulls behind me, then changes his mind and just keeps going. Don't blame him, it's cold as hell out! Unfortunately, there's no real median on the right, either, so I'm half in the lane, and the friendly commuters are whizzing by at 65 mph. I run out and look under my car. Sure enough, one wheel on the axle is still attached, it's now flat against the ground and the axle is poking right up into my engine compartment! After some work I manage to wedge it free, only to notice it's completely covered in really thick, black grease, and that now my snowboarding gloves and snowboarding jacket (which I had been wearing because it's cold and they're warm) are completely covered in the crap. I toss said axle off the road, and take off up the road to the pull-off area to check things out.

Other than a really big, nasty scrape and dent in my skidplate (thanks Kris!!!!!!), things look ok, but I can't really see back into the engine compartment where the axle was poking up. I then notice the guy ahead of me in the pull-off area is having some troubles with his crummy jack, so I offer to help him out with my floor jack that I happened to have in my trunk. 15 mins later my ears and nose are numb thanks to the -30 windchill (idiot... bring a hat next time!), Mr. Salesman has his new wheel on and he's on his way, and I'm hoping my ears don't fall off on the remainder of my commute.

So, anyone got any good tips for getting black grease out of a white Burton snowboarding jacket? Or, anyone have a jacket for sale cheap?

Cliff's notes: Jackass in delivery truck doesn't secure dolly. Said dolly falls off, gets stuck under my car, delivery guy continues. Skidplate saves the oil pan. Ears and nose take a beating from the cold, but appear to have survived.

ALL THIS ON THE COLDEST DAMN DAY OF THE YEAR!!!

so how big is the floor jack that you happened to have in your trunk? mine is like 3.5 tons, not very convenient to carry around.

Oh, like one of the crappy ones that you can buy at Walmart. I think it's 2 tons or something like that. Better than the stock jack.

Lawsuit time!

At least for the cost of the car repairs & clothing...get a hold of that delivery company ASAP!

Oh, and it's currently 64...I had to bring a sweater for the drive in this morning!

I have no idea who was driving the truck. He was long gone by the time I could look up.

You will not be able to get that grease out of your jacket. But at least now you have a warm coat to work on your car with.

Yeah, true I washed it with various concoctions of Goof Off hand cleaner, spot remover, Simple Green, Dawn, and other crap. Took out a bunch of it, but there are still big black spotches of crap on there. Oh well, I guess I'll stick out as the car guy on the slopes this season

Looks like I managed to get it all out of my gloves. Of course the gloves are black, so stains are no problem. I just wanted to make sure I didn't go into toxic shock the next time I wore them

Smear grease on the rest of your jacket. Voila!

Glad the debris didn't head towards your windshield!

Snapped some pics for all your edification.

First shot, showing how the skid plate is pushed up and the very long contact point down the skid plate. Impressively, no damage to the bumper! Gotta love that Subaru ride height...

Same shot, a little lower:

Here's the scratch in the skid plate:

A little further back in the car. Anyone see anything that looks out of whack?

Closeup on the dent, which is right under the oil pan. About the size of a quarter and pretty deep. I figure this is where the wheel got stuck and started to fold:

And here's the obligatory "My car is covered in road salt, and it's too damn cold to wash it" picture

So, as far as I can tell, no damage. I'm still not sure, but it sure looks that way. I'm very impressed, as I think just about any other car would have lost their bumper on what I hit.
