Criteria for 10 best? I always wonder about what makes a car worthy of 10best or MT's Car of the Year. Spun all sorts of different ways, we could have all sorts of different contenders.

How can the Boxster and Cayman share a spot? They're totally different cars.

They certainly are not any more different than any other coupe/vert twins on the market. They are in fact probably one of the closest. Or are you a proof that Porsche's marketing trick to charge more for the coupe than a vert actually worked? |

Yes, the GTI belongs there. It is a blast to drive. The direct injection 2.0L is amazing as well as the 6spd. It has a top notch interior and very unique looks. Oh yeah, it gets 32mpg and has plaid seats. The handling is very much reminiscent of my fiancee's MINI Cooper S. Add in the $20k starting price, and you have a winner. Quote:

These cars got kicked off: TSX, A3, RX-8, and Mustang and got replaced by the Fit, G35 Sedan, Mazdaspeed 3 and GTI.
http://www.caranddriver.com/bestcars...cars-2006.html IMO they should have put the entire Mazda 3 line since everyone likes it and replace the GTI with the Mustang. GTI is a good car, but not perfect, and I think the Mustang deserves a spot for being a nice, cheap sports car in the market. |

The GTI and Mustang are not even remotely in the same class. The mustang is a yawner for the money, and the most popular one is the V6 model. The TSX is essentially an expensive Accord (Euro R-ish). The A3 is so far overpriced for what you get, it didn't stand a chance. How much do you want to pay for your Jetta wagon with quattro (which I cant remeber if it is torsen or haldex). The RX8 is great, but there are reliability issues and build quality issues, and the masses are not ready to embrace the nuances of a rotary engine. Though I wouldn't ever buy one, the GTI belongs there. I am surprised that the Saturn Aura didn't make it. Maybe next year.

Haldex is a manufacturer of traction system (drivetrain) components. Torsen (TORque SENsing) is a form of differential technology. I believe they had been utilizing a torsen-type center diff in VAG cars as well as many of the Ford units amongst other manufacturers from the Haldex group. There are many others who play in the same market as Haldex however to include but not limited to: BorgWarner, Getrag, GKN, Magna Drive Train, Toyoda and ZF.

^ HUH?? AFAIK Torsen is a company too and the type of differentials they make are called helical LSDs... no?

Doh, what was I on when I wrote that. Torsen is also a division of a company and their shall I say flavor of helical differentials are listed as Torsen units, which can be used in different applications. They are mostly used currently in SUV/truck applications, however also older Audi's.

engine - Cayman S currently has a 3.4 litre engine that the Boxster S won't get until this year, so currently they are different. That engine shares a bit in common with the 911's, with variable valve timing, etc. trans - yeah, i'm pretty sure thats right. the gear ratios in first and second are shorter, if i remember correctly. suspension - of course, cayman's is tuned more aggressively (stiffer body). wheels are different dimensions - can't argue with that! After this year, they will be the same, but I really like both and I'm glad both of them got on there. |

I was disappointed to see the Mustang go...but I'm happy the MS3 is there. I thought it was interesting that there was not a single Toyota or Lexus....not that I'm complaining. |

When CD chose the Mustang last year, they only included the GT model. And CD's review of the Aura wasn't all that great...& unless its changed quite a bit for next year (which it won't be), it won't be eligible. Cars have to be new for the corresponding model year or prior year's winners to be in the competition. |
