Superformance Cobra breaks top speed record at 201 mph image
The original Shelby Cobra is selling for astronomical prices – so there’s a big market for replicas of the ubiquitous American supercar, from companies such as Superformance.

The firm is striving to deliver replicas with the exact same levels of performance at a much more affordable price level – but they sometimes overshoot. Case in point – the record that held since way back in 1967 when a Cobra topped out at 198 mph has been broken by Superformance’s version, which capped at 201 mph. The firm’s latest Superformance MkIII is to blame, taking up the mantle of becoming the world’s fastest road-legal Cobra after being clocked at 201.1 miles per hour (324 kilometers per hour) at the Mojave Air and Space Port. It’s a client example – with owner Ted Taormina nicknaming it the Italian Job, due to the country’s flag red, white, and green stripes on the body.

Superformance customers of course get the bespoke treatment – and Taormina’s example of course is fully aware of that. It’s motivated by a Shelby Engines’ 427 FE V8 with a great 690 horsepower (515 kilowatts) and 710 pound-feet (963 Newton-meters) of torque. Aerodynamics are handled by a front spoiler and canards for extra downforce and a diffuser at the back. The suspension has a bespoke tune – and we can tell you the record has been long in preparation. Previous passes were over at 169 mph (272 kph) and 190.1 mph (306 kph).

Two things: 198 mph 50 years ago in a Cobra. Amazing. Only 3 mph faster a half century and 690 hp later?

I'm sure someone will come back with, "well, wind resistance increases exponentially with speed" or whatever. Maybe it's a bunch of factors as to why they were only capable of achieving a 3 mph differential.

Well, wind resistance increases exponentially with speed, or whatever.

Seriously though, I believe it's an achievement because it's still running (mostly) the same 60's technology & engineering; 200mph in a roofless car is pretty damn easy these days, but on 60's tech it's pretty impressive; however, I could be completely wrong and this might just be a puff piece for the company.

I am speaking from experience here, the aerodynamics of these make this really impressive.

Well, fine sir, you too have earned the coveted balls of steel award!

Mine is way squirrely and wants to swap ends on full power well above 100MPH. I may have put too much motor in it Backpedal and she's OK.

What are you running, my Cobra is stock..the one we got wrecked was all modded with a stand alone subframe, Salisbury made Jag diff ,Burtis Watts link system with high-strength stub axle shafts. There only so much you can do at 2600 pounds but mine stays pinned..

Mine is a Backdraft, so M3 suspension - motor is a Roush Yates w/ D3 heads - detuned Nascar motor but still makes power at 9K+. It's difficult to feel when it begins to lose traction when over-pedalling it in a straight line - it lights them up at 100+MPH if I'm above 6-7K with the pedal on the floor - makes for some puckering moments.

Very nice. Mine is a simple FFR challenge. It's been a blast though and makes a great track rat. It's doesn't pack the punch of either of yours but it's nicely balanced.
