eh, this is all just chatter anyway, not sure who would dare protest it with the explanations already on the book. Let's turn this convo back to subie-ville.

Who wants to run 245/45's to get some taller 2nd gear?

I tried it, I still had to shift to 3rd on national courses, so I prefer the gearing advantage of the shorter tires. FYI I have NO power adders yet, I think a fully prepped car would have a bigger problem.

Is the Crawford AOS legal in ST?

It is not. The Crawford AOS requires removal of the PCV valve, which is considered to be an emissions device. ST* doesn't allow this, but *SP does.

That is what I thought. So our only options are the grimmspeed style and/or a catch can?

Yes. I run my car in ASP and use the Crawford V2 AOS. I had the Grimmspeed unit prior, and it has a horrible design. Under hard cornering, oil comes right up the filler neck and valve cover hoses. The Grimmspeed unit replaces the oil cap and the oil was forced through, taking the path of least resistance, and ending up in the turbo inlet. Many people have reported excessive smoking after startup and things of that nature when using the Grimmspeed unit.

I highly suggest a catch can system of some sort. Maybe look into the new Moroso stuff?

Finally posting my set-up as I'm Auto-Xing an entire season this year.

2004 STI.

Engine: Stock.

Exhaust: Stock.

Suspension: Stock sway bars 20mm F 19mm R, TiC SST coilovers 7k F 5k R, MSI street front plates canted for max caster, Group N rear tops, Whiteline offset caster bushings, poly rear lateral & trailing/diff/outrigger/cross member/front sway/steering rack bushings.

Alignment: Ride height 14" F & 13 5/8" R, -2.7* Camber F, 7* Caster F, 0.0* Toe F, -1.6* Camer R, 0.0*Toe

Tires: Dunlop Star Specs, 245/40/17 on 17x8.5 +40 RPF1s

Other: Group-N engine/tranny/pitch, KB short throw shifter and bushings w/ TiC pivot

Run with max rear bias on DCCD. When I get more consistent/faster I'll further dial in the spring rates and swaybars.

For those running 17s. It seems like 245/40 is the preferred choice but are there many running 245/45s to help get a little more speed out of each gear? I know the sidewall is taller which would likely be less responsive but if run on a 9 or 9.5" wheel I'd think it would just barely stretch enough to be alright. Thoughts? Or 245/40 is clearly proven faster?

245/45 doesn't stretch second gear nearly enough........

This.

In an 07 i still needed third gear on national level courses. You seem to be better off taking the gearing advantage of the 245/40, and accepting the need to shift

We run 245/40/18 to get the extra speed in 2nd while maintaining responsiveness. Seems to work pretty well so far. The low end gearing disadvantage and 3rd gear disadvantage is very minimal if you have enough power.

Hi guys, autocrossed my wrx for the first time yesterday. First time racing on an AWD platform, ever.

2011 WRX

Engine: Stock

Exhaust: Stock

Suspension: Stock

Alignment: Stock

I got WRECKED, lol. Should I even be in STU? I still have a TON of learning to do with this car, it's a bit different from my long line of honda's I'm used to racing. Looking forward to learning from the best here

Caballo,

What mods do you have on the car? What tires? If you really didn't change anything yet and you are on street tires, RTA is the class for you. It follows the "Stock" level of preparation (in our case with the '11 WRX, D-Stock) but limits the tires to treadwear 140 or higher. Your PAX results will look better with the softer RTA PAX.

Have fun!

Scott

I assume he was in STU due to different wheels/tires than stock. That would be the only reason I could see that you would end up in STU.

I just installed a catless downpipe with a tune. I've had the OEM tires that I bought the car with; although I'm starting to look into some new 140+ options for next time.

I'm assuming the downpipe keeps me out of RTA; on that note, am I still okay in STU? is there any class inbetween?

Yes the DP keeps you out of RTA, unfortunately in the catless configuration it keeps you out of STU as well. The first place that would be legal is SP, off the top of my head i would say ESP. Someone correct me if I'm wrong there.

You can either add a cat or get a catted DP for STU

The 08+ WRX is in ASP, on the same line as the 08+ STI

oops maybe I should have read the rules better. Ah well, I mostly autocross for the fun of it, I probably wouldnt have made my car wildly competitive. What kind of setups am I likely to see in ASP?

A lot of the SE regions run an STM class, which is a catch all on street tires. You could see if your region has something similar.

The big difference with ASP is that it is a r-comp class, and most external engine mods are legal. Most bolt on suspension mods are legal as well, although some like an ALK are not.

It's been a while ... I thought STU allowed Dp's ... you just had to have one (high flow) CAT with in a certain distance of the downpipe ?

ASP is the home of big hairy fast Z06's with spoilers, light fast supercharged Exige's ...

My boss's National Championship winning ASP Z06, in the hands of Ken Motonishi:

Don't forget ASP is also home to heavily modified Solstice GXP's. Basically ASP is home to lots of scary creatures. Did the Vette get moved to SSP? I may be a bit off but I thought they had created an extra SP Class this year to seperate cars at the top a bit more.

Anyway. Yeah you will likely get killed in ASP unless the car is a trailer queen. So don't worry about mods at this point. Just do what you want to the car and figure out which class you need to be in. Heck, just run as XP or SM and you can change most everything you want.

Besides, if you changed the DP and got the car tuned your Tune wouldn't be STU legal I am betting since for STU you aren't allowed to touch the boost map.

I did read that downpipes are allowable in STU, but I didn't give much thought to the cat. I'm not planning on going to nationals, but I'd like to be [somewhat] competetive locally. I don't see any Z06 monsters in my region but I don't like the fact that ASP runs r-comps. Not interested in dumping that much money into just wheels.

And yes I tweaked the target boost and most other oem ECU parameters. This car is mainly a spirited daily driver, and I have my eyes set on regularly tracking it through HPDE and such. Autocross is a cheaper alternative, though. Eventually I'd love to have a dedicated autocross car, but I'm having way too much fun exploring the AWD platform at the moment (this is my first one coming from a long line of honda's).

Can't touch boost for STU.

If you want to be competitive, either run Street Mod and hope no one good shows up lol, or go back to stock boost levels, run a catted downpipe and start looking at suspension and tires.
