The Long Road to Figure Skating: A Build Thread.
Simply put, I was pretty bummed out when I woke up yesterday, to the news that Japspeed had just built a 1JZ WRX drift car (which is amazing by the way..). Why you ask? For the last 12 months, I've been doing just that in my garage at home. But not with the 1J, with it's big brother, the 2JZGTE. Sourced from a Toyota Aristo.
I never had plans to do a progress thread with this car, so pictures thus far are scarce. I've also been working with a fairly tight budget, hence so little progress being made in a years time. Hopefully things will start picking up though Also, keep in mind that I haven't driven this car in close to three years ( ) 15 Moving Violations within a 7 month period tends to make it difficult to find insurance. On to the pictures! The car: My 2003 WRX Sedan. Pitcures are olllllld. Back when stock wheels were acceptable and slated pictures were a MUST! The 2J (on the right, 1J on the left): Stripping it of emission related vacuum lines: First test fit! The progress killers All comments, criticism, questions and general dislike welcome. More to come................. iblookslike9vapors/2jzwithnaspicture |

Looks awesome and those staggered CCW's are sick. Can't wait to see the finished car. Are you going to keep it the same on the outside?

Dude, just overnight the parts from Japan! Put it on your tab with Harry!
Sorry, the 2JZ reference is just too much to pass. All kidding aside man, should be sick! Can't wait to see how this pans out, and you can still be the first to cram a 2JZ in there! /cheer |

Holy moly guys!! Thank you! Wasn't expecting a warm response to this
As far as the outside goes, it will remain green, carbon hood and trunk are gone, picked up a prodrive front lip (still not sure if it will be used), I'll be making some over fenders for the rear/spacing the fronts and will attempt to make a duckbill type spoiler for the rear (if you're familiar with Rocket Bunny.....think THAT!). AND it will be too low. The fitment of the whole set up is a little crazy. The motor is pretty tall, and obviously long! The only thing I've had to remove so far to help it fit length wise was the pitch stop mount. The crossmember is the big killer. With the engine resting on it, my hood had like a 5 inch gap in the front My engine came front sump (2Js came front, mid or rear) and the crossmember had to be notched and lowered about an inch to clear the oil pan and allow me to keep the hood aesthetically stock. I'll try to grab some pictures tonight. Most people I've seen go rear wheel drive have used the R200 from an S-chassis car or Skyline, then get custom axles made. I'm going to try a little bit different way, as I can't spend $900+ on axles alone! I am going to attempt to shoehorn an entire rear subframe assembly from an S13 into my car. That way if I break an axle, I can jump on craigslist or NWN and pick up a pair for ~$40. Also, there's an awesome aftermarket for all of the control arms and links! |

Quick little update with a few phone pictures!
Just pulled the rear subframe assembly out and started taking measurements for the 240sx subframe mounting points, which are quite a bit different than the stock ones obviously. I'm pulling the gas tank tomorrow so I'll start test fitting the rear end. This isn't at all how fitment will be, just got bored and wanted to see an 11" wheel on a stock bodied WRX -Steven |

Thanks guys! Work during the week will definitely slow any progression, but I'll try to get as much done as possible.
The first major issue I came across was the positioning of the rear struts. Our Imprezas lower mounting point for the strut is on the forward edge of the hub/knuckle, in front of the rear axle. The 240sx struts bolt to the rear most edge, behind the axles. In other words, say you're looking at your car with the rear wheel off and notice the placement of your strut. Now move the lower mounting point of that strut back 6 inches or so (haven't taken an actual measurement yet). What's left is a whole lot of negative caster. No bueno. My first thought was to either move the factory strut towers or build new ones all together, which is a big task! Or maybe somehow try to mount the strut on the front of the knuckle? Anybody have any suggestions or input? Does this even make sense?? PS Fergi Ferg, if you want to hold off on that "Big Build" Top Scoob for a couple of months, I'd be ok with it Last edited by yankdanger; 01-31-2011 at 05:31 PM. |
