Talking My Photos from the Thunderbird Rally with Subie Gal

Well, i am home, back in the UK. I cant sleep at all so here are some of my favourite shots from the TBird Rally. I am a lucky SOB being able to do this and having such great friends over in Seattle.
Its hard to believe just 12 months ago i didnt know either Jamie or Richard, amazing what friends you can make from a meeting aranged on the internet because of a common interest in Subaru's and Motorsport. I hope you enjoy the photo's.

Just after tech inspection, it's -12 celcius, bit nippy.

Yes Jamie, stage 2 is next up. (my favourite shot of the rally)

Startline for the frozen lake ice racing track

Pre-Final stage of the rally, Camera in hand as always

Some of the stunning scenery of British Columbia, wish i was back there now, the photo's cant do it justice.

RangeRover crossing the suspension bridge, about the only time it wasnt off track all event!

InCar on the Frozen Lake Ice racing course, that was a lot of fun.

One of the faster sections of a TBird stage, one of the few oportunities i had to take a shot during a stage.

Waiting to start one of the regularity stages on day 1.

Another pre-stage shot, Jamie out taking photos as usual.

In transit to the start of the next regularity, even the transit roads were ice and snow covered.

Running alongside yet another frozen lake on the way to stage start.

The oposition, Richard Squire and Glenn Wallace running car 1

The office of a top TSD rally Team.

Phew, we finished the rally in one piece and had a huge amount of fun along the way, i think the smile sums up the weekend, it was a lot of fun and an experience i will never forget.

I'm glad to see you love road rally as much as me. There is nothing like the relationship that a driver and navigater has. Love the pictures.

You've made a huge mistake taking those photos...... there are none of yourself in them!

I do the same thing when I'm taking pictures, I always forget to hand the camera to someone else so I can get in at least one shot with yours truly in the frame.

That looked like a ton of fun, I really wish there were events like that around here.

Cool

Cool. That looks like a lot of fun (and V E R Y cold). Those were some absolutely incredible shots of the mountains. We're going to have to organize a desert TSD rally and show you guys some shots of mountains without snow on them.

However, I do have one comment (that I'm amazed nobody else has had the guts to say). Subie Gal, those yellow steelies are absolutely hideous. Yuch! Now I know why you're looking for rally rims.

[Edit: I guess if I'm going to criticize your choice in wheels I should at least spell your name right.]

I love the snow on the door in the photo of Richard and me. It was coming down a bit.

Not as much snow as we're used to, there was more on Totem, but quite chilly.

Subie Gal -- I can see why you got rid of the exploding bag that usually resides in the steering wheel - a.k.a. the airbag!

The rally is a TSD rally. They are held on open public roads. Saying that, i think we only saw about 10 cars all event on the stages that were driven by locals.

I liked that one too Glenn, i must have been nuts taking those shots as i was running around with just a tshirt and fleece on. Enthusiasm gets the better of me at times.

Glad you guys like the photos, they really dont do justice to what we saw, i am having serious withdrawal symptoms now, 2 weeks sure does fly by when your having fun.

Question

Great photos. It's nice to see a wagon there as well. Does anyone know where to get the brushguard that is on the wagon? I have been looking everywhere for a nice brushguard and that one is beautiful! Although, I can see it now, once I get the brushguard, I just HAVE to get the PIAA's! Oh well, we have to spend money on something, right?
Thanks,
Steve

Jamie- Is it really comfy to sit so close to the wheel. Don't you get fatigued easier and it looks like you have to hold your elbows up. Good thing you don't have an air bag.

hi Garface,

It's a common misconception about driving positions when rallying. You actually have more control if you sit upright with a good bend in your elbows than if you take the racing driver layed back style aproach.

You have much greater leverage over the steering driving the way Jamie does.

Take a look at the modern WRC drivers, they all sit like this, Delecour and Pinizi do in particular.

One of the biggest problems with airbags in the USA in particular is they dont cater for people below 5' 5" at all well. They can cause far more damage if they go off if you have to sit close to the wheel like Jamie does due to her height.

I feel the Car Manufacturers need to do far more work to make vehicles more suited to women in particular, there are too many incedents of women being hurt by airbags deploying full power into their faces.

A system like that used in the Marcos sports car would be a big step forward, in that car the seat is static, the pedals and wheel move for and aft to allow for perfect positioning.

I get the YELLOWNESS Jamie, but then i am rather unusual.

Cool! That looks like a load of fun! Wish I could've been there. And what great scenery. I need to see more of the world. Illinois gets dull after a couple decades.

Would I be out of line if I said Subie Gal is quite attractive? Just thought I'd pay her the compliment, since I was thinking it.

I wish I was rally racing. Don't have the money for it right now, though. I think I'll settle for auto-x to get my feet wet, since I haven't done any kind of competition driving yet.

I think you've got "yellowness" on the brain.

...and you're just sucking up John! A grown man, "getting the yellowness."

The wife, schnauzer and I are planning a trip to Oregon around April 22nd. I understand you've got a local rallycross that weekend. There's a good chance I'll run in it. You'll see some RED then! Ha, ha...

You guys have got some beautiful country up North. I look forward to seeing it. (Um... without the snow, please.)

Rally-on,
