Hello NASIOC!
My name is Michael; some of you may know me from YouTube, local events, or the Porsche/Volvo/F150/Outback forums. My wife and I are both into track days, autocross, hill climb, rallycross, and just enjoying the local mountain roads. Some of our current and past builds include... 2008 Volvo C30, manual, turbo, and the 7th (legal) AWD conversion in the world. 272whp and 345ftlbs at the wheels. 2006 Volvo V50, manual, turbo, AWD. Stage3 tuned. 2008 Porsche 987S Other cars and full build sheets can be seen here: https://www.michaelchallock.com/ I'm pleased to introduce my wife's new-to-her 2016 WRX, which we have appropriately named the Black Pearl. It's a Base model, just like I wanted, but the previous owner kindly retrofitted the factory fog lights. We've set aside a small budget for her to modify it however she wants cosmetically and performance wise. The V50 above was entirely her build, so I'm excited to see what she does with this one. First order of business has been to upgrade all the front facing lights to LEDs. Tested the H8 LED fog light kit from my 987 in the Subie's low beams. Light output is significantly better than the stock halogen bulbs and the cutoff is surprisingly sharp even with the stock projectors. I'm just pleased to find that these cars don't have PWM lights (or they're at least not throwing any codes for me).
We disabled the DRLs by modifying the relay, just like I had done on my Outback. DRLs aren't a legal requirement here and I don't like the way the high beams glow. Ordered another LED kit for the fog lights. Swapped the license plate bulbs and the front running lights to LEDs. Swapped the interior dome light to an LED. The steering wheel has a dent in the leather, so I ordered a new perforated skin. I also did some research on the parts currently installed on this car, as it's not stock.
My C30 was dyno'd at 272whp and current weighs around 3000lbs. 0-60 is consistently at 5 seconds, occasionally sub-5 once the tires are warm. This WRX can pull about 1 car length on the C30 by the top of 2nd gear, so I'm pleased with where it currently is power-wise. No plans to add anything else in the performance category and since I already have two cars with track setup coilovers, we'll be leaving the suspension stock until it needs to be replaced. My wife filled up her shopping cart with the aero parts and vinyl, so the plan is to "finish" this family-car build by the end of the year and then enjoy it for many years to come. My wife has started a new video series for her car. It's her first attempt at creating content for YouTube, so be sure to "like" and leave positive comments!

My wife has been busy with modifying her new toy!
Perforated steering wheel skin with red stitching. Blacked out the chrome in the headlights and installed a WRX grille badge. |

I figured if the made-in-China fitment was poor or if the quality doesn't withstand the test of time, it was only $25 and I can later cash out for a Redline Goods product. But the fitment turned out to be perfect. The kit includes everything you need for installation and enough thread to stitch it together twice. You don't need to know how to sew to install this, you just need to know how to thread a needle and loop it underneath the preexisting stitches. Total install time took about an hour. It goes over the stock leather wheel, so it's easily removable (if you don't use the tape) and it gives to overall wheel a slightly thicker grip. We'll see how well it holds up to use, but I'm pleased so far. They also offer different thread color options, different materials, and an optional center line. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hand-Stitch...72.m2749.l2649 |

I really like that red stitching on the steering wheel, is that custom or is it a premade wheel?

I just ordered one of these. The original wheel cover doesn’t feel like leather and it certainly isn’t holding up like leather so this will be an upgrade. |

While I love the yellow fog lights that people run, I also love having the fog lights match the low beams in color temperature. |

It was a kit that I won off ebay a few years ago, so I don't have a valid link anymore. Though with how LED technology has advanced in the last few years, even the cheap $10 Chinese LED bulbs can produce pretty decent light output and the more expensive kits have only gotten better. So I'm sure you can find something that performs even better than what I currently have for less money than I paid.

Volvo how-to videos are what my YouTube channel "famous" in the Volvo community, mostly because no one had previous done such videos. I know there's already a plethora of how-to video for these cars, but I thought I would continue with my style of editing.
My motto is to show what needs to be done, show the realistic struggle of removing parts, and speed up the monotonous tasks in post so that the final video is a quick 30 second to 2 minute piece. I hate watching the 5+ minute videos of people stumbling around for tools, editing out struggles to make it look easy, justifying why they got a certain part, and giving their review. I just want to quickly know how to remove things or install things. Here are a few videos for things I have done so far. Hopefully these can help out some others! I'll continue to add to the playlist as I continue to remove parts, perform maintenance, and install mods. |

Got the cover installed. Better than the worn out factory one but the fit isn’t quite right. It’s fun $25 experiment.
Thanks for being the guinea pig on that one. Edit: spelling Last edited by n7slc; 01-05-2020 at 07:13 PM. |

The cheap price probably means a lack of quality control. Mine was a perfect fit with no gaps. At the end of the day, still better than a Walmart steering wheel cover. |

Thanks to this forum, I have ruled out the idea of getting a TurboSmart Dual Port BPV.
I don't like that it's locked in at 50/50; I've had "dual port" style valves on other builds that let you adjust the atmospheric venting psi, so it would only vent under high boost conditions that were beyond optimal recirculation levels. But I now see that these cars can easily recirculate as much boost as the stock turbo can make. No point in wasting performance for audible-cosmetic PSSHHH noises. I've noticed that boost is definitely bleeding off between 2-4psi from the not-fully-closed factory recirculation valve. It's fine any higher or lower and there are no boost leaks. So I'll probably just go with the Perrin BPV the next time it goes on sale or if I can find one for a good deal in classifieds. I am also on the hunt for a Mishimoto Street TMIC. I'm not looking for any added performance and I have no plans of going any further than Stage2+. But living in the South East, every turbo car I have owned has experienced heat soak even when stock. Mishimoto's Street TMIC caught my attention for multiple reasons. 1. I have been a satisfied Mishimoto customer in the past. 2. Their Street TMIC should perfectly suffice for my needs on a tuned commuter car that only sees occasional mountain runs. 3. I really enjoyed reading Mishimoto's R&D thread on this forum and like to support vendors who contribute so much to these communities. But I am open to other TMIC suggestions that people might have. The car is a commuter, so I can wait for the next good deal to come up. But an upgraded TMIC is a definite future upgrade. |
