New thread to track this build. This is my current track car. The car came to me with an invidia N1 titanium tip exhaust. I upgraded the shifter bushings (front + rear) with stiffer kartboy bushings, stainless steel brake lines, and motul DOT 5.1. I blew the stock motor, ~65psi on #4 and #3. No metal shards in oil pan, cooler, or chips in stock turbine. After tearing this thing apart, I figured I'd build it out to much higher capability. I'm hoping this build will get me to ~450-500whp with a considerable amount of headroom for higher power levels after I pick up a short block that will take the beating. Between the E85, fat turbo, and S3 cams, I'm hoping to make full boost by around 4krpms. Once I get bored of this new setup, I'll have an old block sent to IAG for stage 4 mods and pick up a few more go fast goodies to really make this bird sing. I'm not planning on completing the mods under the "future" section for some time. Don't see the need for -10 fuel hose. -8 feed -6 return will be plenty. I would also use the oem head gasket over the JE, they seem to seal better all the way to 800whp. if your trying to push more than 25 psi I would also go with the 625+ head studs if you aren't going 1/2 or 14mm for now.

Some build updates: as these things tend to do, I am going to end up spending a lot more than originally planned. Had some FC (foreign contaminant) get blown into the stage 1 short block I have assembled and lubed up, so I'm going to tear it down and send it off to my local shop to get sleeved. I'll inspect the pistons and rods (only 3k miles or so) and probably sell them off. Going to go with:
* Darton sleeves * Cosworth pistons w/ the upgraded wrist pins * Pauter rods * ARP 625 rod bolts * New king race bearings * Stock STi crank * Ported and radiused oil galleys in the case halves * Cosworth 11mm oil pump * 14mm ARP head studs * Killer B pickup (Moroso one I have is garbage -- it's one of their earlier styles with the oil tube flange that sits out further than the end of the pickup tube, looks very prone to leaks and build quality is abysmal) * Moroso aluminum deep sump pan (planning on pulling engine often so the trapdoor isn't a problem) * Manley race flo +1mm intake valves * Manley race master +1mm exhaust valves * Clearanced heads for 280 lift (GSC S3) cams * Drilled heads for 14mm studs * Manley beehive springs, titanium retainers, new retainer clips Need to decide on if I want to o-ring it and what I want to do with the fueling. I plan to store that value, and pull/inspect/rebuild the engine based on the total accumulation of torque output and total starts. When I said full boost by 4k rpms, I guess I was pretty damn spot on

The compressor map is what it is -- it won't be flowing any more air, but the VE and turbine efficiency numbers I estimated are definitely on the low side. With higher VE estimates, the boost numbers should go down. I wouldn't be surprised if the final build doesn't crack 40psi at 680 crank. I have a 500CFM donaldson 4" air filter (AKA the BHAF for my diesel friends). This is a semi truck, high service interval filter with a low micron rating. My exhaust is pretty free-flowing as well -- oversized valves with high lift cams and mildly ported/polished heads flowing to full-race headers and a full-race up-pipe, then to a 3" catless downpipe and a 3" Invidia N1 catback. According to the Borg Warner calculator, at 3,000 RPM, 10psi of boost, 160hp and 280lb-ft of torque at 3,500 RPM, 15psi of boost, 225hp and 335lb-ft of torque at 4,000 RPM, 53psi of boost, 565hp and 745lb-ft of torque 38psi is quite a lot to build over 500RPM. The hell do I need to do to keep 53psi of boost contained with Darton sleeves and 14mm head bolts??? Pretty stoked I'm not going to need to rev this build out past 7k, sticking with that lower redline will help reduce internal fatigue in the long run. Last edited by a0d; 05-20-2020 at 02:19 PM. |
