Default Suzuki Swift Sport Concept

Quote:
Pumped up Swift concept to preview new Suzi light-car plus 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and AWD tech

Suzuki is planning a surprise for October's Tokyo motor show in the form of Swift Sport Concept, which employs lines from the next-generation model and adds a strong dose of the rally-inspired aggression.

Boasting a body more than 1.8 metres wide and a generous sprinkling of edgy aero parts, the concept will be powered by the new 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with 'Booster Jet' turbo technology that was first revealed at this year’s Shanghai show.

But that’s just one part of this concept’s powertrain. According to Japan’s scoop bible, Holiday Auto magazine, the powerplant will be further boosted by a hybrid unit featuring the company’s ‘S-Energy’ system, which employs large-capacity lithium-ion batteries to boost power and allow for zero-emissions electric-only cruising.

The Swift concept will also get a revised version of the Twin Clutch System (TCS) currently seen in the UK-spec SX-4 S-Cross 4WD.

Japan’s biggest mini-car maker calls its AWD system 'All Grip' and we are told it will be improved via a special ‘sports mode’ setting which activates 4WD in a straight line then reverts to front-drive when entering a turn, before switching back to 4WD as you get back on the gas.

While the all-new Swift is expected to debut at the Geneva show next March, this sports concept will preview it as the highlight of Suzuki’s stand in Tokyo this year.

Yeah, seems backwards.

I do like the looks of the old one, on the outside at least.

I've always understood that fwd has better turn in, it's the exit that's a problem. So maybe they're on to something.

Default Suzuki to further evolve Swift Sport

Quote:
Quote:
Suzuki’s new turbocharged Swift Sport is already the brand’s most potent and technologically advanced hot hatch yet, but it will continue to improve.

Speaking to motoring.com.au at the Australian launch of the new Swift Sport yesterday, Suzuki Australia general manager of automobiles Michael Pachota said a sportier differential and sport-mode stability control are under consideration.

“Suzuki is progressing year-on-year in terms of development of its handling and performance-style features,” Pachota said when asked about the potential for torque vectoring or a limited-slip diff.

“I believe there would be room for further development and growth in that area down the track, but at this stage there has been no commitment from Suzuki Japan as to those additions to the car in the near future.”

Pachota was more positive about the much-improved driver assistance programs in the new Swift Sport, which now include as standard adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.

Absent, however, and available in many of the Swift Sport’s competitors, is the availability of a sport mode for the stability control, which currently operates in only fully on or fully off modes.

“Such technology wasn’t available for the Australian market when we were placing orders on the vehicle,” he explained.

“Based on the advancements that we’ve seen so far, the development of our brand and what we have to offer, I can’t see things like that in the future not being available.”

Priced from $25,490, the new Swift Sport is powered by a 103kW/230Nm direct-injected and turbocharged BOOSTERJET 1.4-litre petrol four, offering gains of 3kW/70Nm over its predecessor.

Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions are available, the latter replacing the outgoing Sport’s continuously variable unit.

The larger Swift Sport rides on Suzuki’s more-rigid HEARTECH platform – which it shares with the new Baleno – and is suspended by strut front and torsion beam rear suspension.

Standard equipment includes flow-formed 17-inch alloy wheels, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay-equipped 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment, automatic LED headlights, fabric seat trim and a D-shaped leather-bound steering wheel.

Safety items extends to six airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, autonomous emergency braking, daytime running lights, high-beam assist, lane departure and weaving alert, tyre pressure monitoring, four-wheel disc brakes and traction/stability control.

The 2018 Swift Sport was yesterday awarded a maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Cliff notes & conversions for my fellow Americas - Turbo 1.4l that makes 138hp/162tq at the flywheel in a 2,100lb+/- car with a 6mt or T.C. automatic. Drops to FWD in the corners, back to AWD on the straights. no torque vectoring, no LSDs. roughly a 15lb:1hp, estimated 0-60 6.2sec (assuming the AWD system is up to it), likely closer to 7sec on street tires though.

Default 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Gains Hybrid System, Loses 10 HP In The Process

2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Gains Hybrid System, Loses 10 HP In The Process

Quote:
Suzuki is launching the updated Swift Sport in Europe with the company’s latest mild-hybrid technology, which promises not only better efficiency but also improved driveability for the small warm hatch.

At the heart of the new Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid we still find a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder Boosterjet petrol unit which is now complimented by a 48-volt lithium-ion battery and an integrated belt-driven starter generator. The latter not only acts as a starter motor but also assists the engine with extra torque in the lower rev range.

The four-cylinder turbo engine has also been updated with a new electric variable valve timing system, new fuel injectors and a higher-pressure fuel pump, a larger radiator and a retuned exhaust system while the six-speed manual transmission has been updated for better feel and 10 percent shorter throws.

It’s all well and good until you take a look at the headline figures: the combined output of the new Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid is now rated at 127 HP and 173 lb-ft (235 Nm) of torque, which translates into a loss of 10 HP and a gain of 3 lb-ft compared to the previous version. The electric motor produces 13 HP and 39 lb-ft (53 Nm) on its own.

Acceleration figures is a similar affair, with the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) benchmark completed in 9.1 seconds, a full second slower than the 2019 model. Top speed remains the same, at 130 mph (210 km/h).

Mind you, the small Suzuki warm hatch is now more efficient by six percent, returning an average 50.1 mpg UK on the WLTP cycle and emits 127 g/km of CO2. The hybrid system weighs just 15 kg (33 lbs) and it doesn’t mess with the lightweight nature of the new Swift Sport, which tips the scales at just 1,025 kg (2,259 lbs).

In addition, the new 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid has gained an even more generous equipment list and now includes things like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and traffic sign recognition as standard.

Standard specification also includes LED headlights and daytime running lights, adaptive cruise control, an infotainment system with smartphone integration and navigation, parking sensors and more.

Too bad it looks like schitt.. they have the right idea of making its FWD AWD only when needed like a one way bearing on RC cars to reduce drag.

When you've seen these Swifts blow away Silvia's, RX7's, and GT-R's downhill in the touge, you will believe FWD is very capable for carving corners.. once these cars get going they are very quick. At least with the AWD assist, no more stupid wheel spin even though FWD based.

This design is mad old. Suzuki should bury this thing already. Hyundai and Kia have left some Japanese and American manufacturers in the dust on design.
