Default Built motor question

Hey. I'm getting ready to start a project car (96 Impreza 2 dr) and I've been hunting for a motor. My friend has an 02 WRX with an 18g tuned by XXtuning probably pushing about 400 hp and he has advised me not to swap in an ej20 but instead try to find something stronger, possibly a 2.2 legacy turbo motor or an STi motor. However, money is an issue for me and I like the idea of getting a more common engine that is cheaper than the STi motor. I mean I don't want to go straight to a 500 horsepower motor, I want to build it up over time and end up around 450 hp so I can gradually learn to how to handle the car as it gets stronger and stronger. Its not that I don't trust myself but all too often I hear about kids who go from 100 hp first cars to 300 hp STi's and wreck them just because they haven't learned to drive something with that much power.

Last week a guy on WRXF offered me an ej20 with forged internals and I wanted to get people's opinions on what they think of that idea. What kind of power would you think this motor could handle and how difficult would you expect it to be? My target is 450 hp at the crank by the time I'm done but my friend thinks I'm going to have a lot of trouble getting it that high as we already went through hell getting his to 400 after getting it tuned 3 times.

Any thoughts welcome. Especially from people who have an ej20 with forged internals.

450 at the crank?

Stock JDM motors go WELL above that on 93 with ease with 20G or better.
Stock WRX motors with 20G's make that much, barley though, on 93 as well. That is the limit of the heads.

450 at the crank???... Most non built motors can do that with a aggressively tuned 20G and all the bolt on's.

If your going to biuld a motor then I would look to get 450 at the wheels. Also if you get the EJ20 get the heads ported. For the bottom end see if you can source out a used 2.5 shortblock from there you can slowly get all the needed pieces... .i.e. CP pistons, pauter rods, micro edged crank...etc... look at axisracing's web site to get an idea of what there doing with there staged bottom ends that they sell. Hell you could cryo treat the block and crank if time is on your side... lol.
