Question Harman - Kardon Trip Pro Information

I am working on a stereo system for my '04 STi and came across the Harman - Kardon Trip Pro on the www.crutchfield.com site. It's a head unit with the usual AM - FM receiver, CD player, plus a trip navigator. No map display, it fits the single DIN recepticle. Original cost, $1,500, now priced $500 at Crutchfield or direct from H - K.

I am looking for some experience installing this unit and opinions of it. Anyone with specific experience installing this into an STi, please? Anyone using this at all, how did you like it, how did it work for you?

According to H - K, the install might be a bit tricky as it includes linking up to a "vehicle speed sensor" ( VSS ) wire, probably from the transmission or rear end, probably before it gets to the ECU or elsewhere where it might be altered electronically from the standard form. The rest of the install sounds pretty typical of a stereo head unit excepting plugging in the GPS antenna to the head in the provided hook up, finding a home for it, and running the wire there, probably not a big deal according to the H - K consultant.

Comments, information and help greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Saul

MSD,

My original post had lots of reads but yours is the first interest or reply to date. With all of the experience on the forum, that's kind of a warning - Looks like no one else has tried this yet.

I have talked to a few higher end car audio folks in the SF Bay Area and heard not much interest in H - K car audio either. They seem to feel that H - K is great in HOME audio, car, well.... Of course, they want to sell me what they carry One showed me some Eclipse units which can get an add on function at install or later with similar navigation functions in a single DIN. As usual with Eclipse, both expensive and good stuff....

For now, I am kind of back burner on navigation and concentrating on some good audio. Nav is a nice thing to have but not vital to me and the audio is much more important. The Kenwood "keg" audio storage device ( basically a 20mb hard drive unit ) is appealing but requires a Kenwood receiver. Eclipse has similar as an integrated double DIN but even more expensive that I would believe ( over $4M! ). If I go that way, it will have to be the Kenwood. Or, I can go with the Eclipse receiver, gt an Eclipse CD changer for the tunes and do the nav maybe later if the wallet isn't quite that big yet.....

Decisions, decisions!

I not interested for the Nav (though it would be nice to have), but HK makes nice home amps/recievers. Also, the unit doesn't look like it was lifted from the Space Shuttle. However, I've been checking out some Clarion units that don't look too busy.

Keep us (er me) posted on any of your findings.
