STEREO HELP PLEASE !

I have a 2000 Impreza RS coupe
with a stock am/fm tape player,
and its works perfectly.

I also have a 1993 Impreza wagon
with a stock am/fm radio,
and it also works perfectly.

Why is it that the 2000 radio will work in my 1993 perfectly,
but the 1993 radio will power up,
but have NO SOUND in the 2000

I also tried a 2006 Impreza stock cd player in the
1993 and it worked, and again in the 2000 it would power up, but again NO SOUND...

Whats funny is, when I turned it up loud, the dome light would pulsate like sound was coming out but NO SOUND !

Please help !

I have installed hundreds of stereo's
and have never encountered this type of problem.

Thx, Barry

Problem fixed !

My driver side rear speaker positive connector broke
and was touching the metal base and grounding out,
causing all speakers not to work.

The little tab that holds the positive and negative connectors
must've broke when I test fitted sub box.

I guess the reason the original stock stereo worked and not the others,
was because earlier in the day, I had a friend's kid fall asleep while I was
driving, so I adjusted the fade all the way to only the front speakers.

I've got a 2001 Impreza RS2.5 that I've decided to swap out the 2-din HU/CD for a JVC HD radio. In the process of pulling out the HU, I see that the CD player has two cables. One is a some-odd pin round connector that connects the HU to the CD. The other is a 2 pin connector that has an orange and orange/white wire. Anyone have any idea what this two pin connector is for?

Alas, I don't have the service manuals for the car, so I can't just look it up.

Thanks,
--jc

The 2-pin plug is just for illumination on the CD deck, same as pins 1 and 7 on the radio's main speaker/power connector.

Great thread. I have recently got a 2007 legacy 2.5i AT, and I am very interested to do a SpecB steering wheel (with radio control) conversion. It has been done on GT models. Not sure if the single CD stereo on 2.5i is prewired to accept the control input. Anyone here has any idea?

Many thanks,
JM

I'm not sure either. I haven't seen the 2007 wiring diagrams yet.

You can get an initial answer by looking at the back of your radio. If it doesn't have the 8-pin jack, then you'll know it won't accept the steering wheel buttons. If it does have the jack, it might. Let us know. Pictures are always nice, too!

Subaru Stars Factory speaker wiring - color code reversed?

So I'm upgrading the factory speakers in my wife's 2003 Impreza TS.
There are no polarity markings on the factory front door speakers, so I checked the speaker wiring color code here - <tripledubyu.geocitiesDOTcom/svxdc/WRX-pinout.htm>

Strange thing is, the colors are reversed in my wife's Subie (unless the right front speaker is located in the drivers door?!?)
Now I'm unsure whether I've got the polarity the same as the rear speakers, since I feel I can't trust this document now...
Has anyone else seen this?
What is the correct wiring color & polarity for a 2003 Impreza - Canadian model?

That pinout shows the wire colors of the harness that plugs into the radio. In many models/years the wires change colors by the time they reach the speakers.

Complicating matters is that on some of Subaru's wiring diagrams the wire colors at the speakers are drawn backwards or wrong from reality.

See this thread for colors in the 2002:
Factory speaker wire color codes
Those colors may be the same in the 2003.

Usually, the larger pin at the speaker is +. But a quick and easy way to tell would be to unplug the radio and speaker, and use a battery and voltmeter to check.

Please let us know if your 2003 is the same as the above chart.

R rear + = Blue/Yellow (- is Red/White)
The wires labeled + above are connected to the positive outputs of the stock radio. It's possible that Subaru has reversed the polarity on all of the speakers at the speaker plugs. That will work fine as long as all 4 are reversed.

If you really want to be sure, connect a 1.5v battery across each speaker. + to positive will cause the speaker cone to move out towards the front.

Most of the wires change color mid-way between the radio and the speakers.

....this is the correct color code for the front speakers in my 2003 Impreza TS. I'll post the rear spkr. colour code when I pull those speakers out.

Thanks for pointing out this post SVXdc.
I did a search, but did not find this one.

BTW, I've installed Polk Audio DB650s in the front.
I made my own spacers out of 3/4" MDF.
I sealed the MDF with water-based Varathane outdoor varnish.
I tapered the spacers by slicing 1/4" of thickness off the top, which also angles the speakers up slightly to match the stock built-in door card grilles. No need for longer pins & there is about 1/2" of clearance between the speaker magnet & screw in the window, when all the way down.

I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

Default Well, well

I suppose this question is very stupid, but I wasn't about to start a new thread, and while I've read several pages of the FAQ threads and done a search, I can't find the easy answer I want:

If I get a 2007 6-CD w/MP3 HU, will it fit in place of my 2002 WRX Wagon 6-disc changer? Will it connect AND fit properly, or will I need to modify the opening?

Yes it will fit. Size is still the standard double ISO-DIN. Re-use the mounting brackets from your old factory HU.

Yes, the power/speaker connection is still the same 14-pin plug that Subaru has been using since 1993.

[Added:] Same question was answered in post #49 of this very same thread.

The only issue I've seen so far is if the car you want to install into has a subwoofer that is a plain, unpowered speaker (some Legacies and Foresters have this, in the rear cargo area, not under one of the front seats). The speaker expects to be driven by a 5th channel subwoofer output on the car's HU. The 2007 HUs don't have that extra speaker output.

Plug and play. It's in the FAQ and offsets manifesto at the top of the subforum.

Is there a good non-envasive way to put a aux input on a 07 impreza 1cd stock hu? Most of the information has been on the 6cd changer.

I don't think very many people here have seen a 2007 1-CD unit to know. I haven't.

Does yours include an AUX button on the front? That would be a positive sign.

Could you pull yours and post clear pictures of the back (plus the front and the model # label on the top while you're at it )? We might be able to tell from that.

Take a look at the 2002-2004 install/removal link in post #1 of the "Stock HU" thread. The general idea should be close enough.

If your car is somehow way different, then post a bump here and maybe somebody can dig up an old thread with pics from a '99.

Yes.

In general: If your car's stock radio is double-DIN and the one you want to transplant into it is single- or double-DIN, the new one will fit.

The face of a single DIN is 2" (50mm) tall and 7" (180mm) wide. Double-DIN is two of those stacked (4" tall).

If both cars are 1993 or newer* Subarus then the main speaker/power harness will be plug-and-play.

*Exceptions: 1993-1994 North American Legacies use the older plug; 1995-up are same as other "modern" Subarus. SVXs use a completely different plug (see my homepage for adapters).

Ok so I searched and I couldnt really find an answer to this:
2003 wrx stock HU

So I have 6 discs in the changer.(mind you they've been in for almost a week just rotating.)When I go to change out disc #3 it comes out, but when I go to put the new cd in, it goes 3/4ths in then gets stuck. So I pull it out. Try to reenter it with the load button. No response. Just a little beep noise when i hold the eject button for more than 4seconds...but none of the rest of the cds wont come out. Nor will they play anymore. So now the only thing that works is the Am/Fm Radio and the tape deck that I dont use. Even when i click the "CD" button nothing happens. Radio just continues to play as normal. I took it to the dealer and they said they would have to send it to panasonic to diag. it...So basically the dealer told me they would have to get me a new one. without the return of the other 5 left behind cds in the dash! Anybody else with this problem or Anybody know a way I could go about fixing this? sorry for the long post...just tryin to be as descriptive as possible.

Not hard at all. You'll need:
  1. A reverse harness to plug into your stock HU. It needs to have all 14 wires so that the illumination continues to work. See my homepage link. You'll connect two or all four of the speaker outputs to item #2 or 3...
  2. Line Output Converter (LOC) — converts speaker-level to line-level (RCA plugs). If your amp has speaker-level inputs, you won't need this.
  3. Amplifier
  4. A wiring adaptor ("forward" harness) to connect to the car's stock radio harness. Again, it must have all 14 wires. Connect the ground, power, illumination, and antenna-remote wires straight through to the reverse harness (item #1). If you're sending only 2 speaker outputs to the amp, connect the other two across from the reverse harness to the forward harness.
Basically, items 1 and 4 will resemble a short extension cord, where you can connect after-market stuff in between. Since you did not cut any factory wiring, you can easily unplug all the new stuff and go back to stock.

People who install an amp usually run new speaker wires, but some opt to re-use the car's stock speaker wiring to avoid fishing through the door jams. If you do re-use the car's wiring, you can connect the outputs of the amp to the speaker wires on the forward harness. Otherwise, insulate the ends with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing.
