Default Which way are the upper spring seats orientated on the front struts?

Got in to big a hurry disassembling my oe struts/springs (sold struts) and didn't pay attention to the orientation of the upper spring perches on the front struts. You must reuse these (as well as several other pieces) for the STi setup. The upper spring set is the domed shaped metal piece w/ a lip that sits atop the spring on the front strut. It has three holes on the lip- if someone could tell which way the middle hole is orientated, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Default ahh

From what I remember, on the top perch, there is 3 holes there, you line that up with the rubber ring thing with that dot in the center hole pointing away from the car parallel to the axis, or actually you lined it up with the 2- 19mm plate thing. But I read some instructions that you don't have to line it up in the front struts, only the rear matters. anyone has pictures?

dknc is correct. The fronts have no specific orientation nor are they side specific. The part number is the same for both LH and RH side strut tops and there is not "this end out" marker.

The rear strut tops are completely opposite. Not only are they side specific with separate part numbers for both the RH and LH side, but they are also positional. Its easy with these as they have an arrow to point which direction is "out" and a "LH" or "RH" stamped into them to tell you which side of the vehicle they go on.

I'm probably not explaining myself well enough, I'm interested in theorientation of the upper spring seat, not the strut top. Sits right below the seat (actually there is a washer in between the two). It's # 20 in the diagram- not a good drawing of it actually. Someone may be just able to look into the upper wheel and see how it's orientated.

I know just exactly what you were saying.
the upper spring hat/perch/cover/black/upper spring seat metallic thing right?
It has 3 holes on it right? The (21) rubber seat has 1 rubber dot/nipple on the ring. You lined up that dot with the center hole among the 3 holes on the (20) upper spring seat. and then you line it up facing the (26) bolt plate direction. I think the strut mount (18) can rotate to whatever way you want and it doesn't matter. Let me see if I have some pictures... but in any case,
I think it's iffy in a way that there is no exact orientation of that dot. As long as it's pointing outward away from the car. I think, and I think, the reason is because there is an angle of the upper spring seat that matches the slanted angle of the spring. we need pictures.

And if thats not enough resolution, here is a link to a really high res shot of the same pic. Beware, its 1MB.

Just had mine appart too... there is no absolute alignment or alignment marking. BUT, as the photo shows, the offset of the top hat (part number 20) should match the bottom spring seat... in other words, the shock rod is offset from the center of the spring the same amount at both the top and bottom...

Clear as mud? The way I installed my top mount was to visually align the the point on the edge farthest away from the center hole with the mounting ears on the lower part of the shock body... there is some float to it, so that seems to be close enough and has worked fine for several spring changes.

Thanks for all the help. I just looked in the shop manual and low and behold there is a diagram (under front strut assembly) that shows the upper spring perch w/ a note to align the the three holes toward the outside of the body.

Maybe it will help someone else down the road.

Thanks again for the help.
