Default 2.0L 20g 100 octane

I just got back from my new tune at P&L Motorsports for 100 octane on my 20g and I am very happy with it. It might have made a bit more as it is only a td05 and still using the internal wastegate but I'm very happy where it is at.

Event: dyno pull
Location: P&L Motorsports, Franklin Park IL
Ambient Temp: 81
Elevation: ~650 feet
Weather: warm and sunny
Tires: Geforce sports 234/45/17

Car: 2003 WRX
Tuner: Jorge
Dyno Info: DynoJet
Peak HP at RPM: 361 @ 6450 on 100, 326 @ 6500 on 93, uncorrected
Peak Torque at RPM: 335 @ 4300 on 100, 285 @ 5200 on 93, uncorrected
Baseline hp/tq for a stock on same dyno: 230-240 stock STi
Target Boost: 26 on 100, 21 on 93
Target AFR: 12.2 on 100 11.6 on 93
Fuel: Sunoco GT 100, and Shell 93
Engine/Power Modifications: Full power mod list listed below
Driveline Modifications: 03 WRX 5 speed with RA 1-4 and ACT stage 1 clutch
Suspension Modifications: Coilovers, swaybars, endlinks, rear dif bushings
Other Modifications: BBS wheels with wider than normal tires

Power mods:
Deadbolt td05 20g
Borla exhaust manifold
APS up-pipe
APS 3" exhaust
Deatschwerks 750cc injectors
APS Top Mount intercooler
Samco turbo inlet
P&L high flow intake
AEM map sensor
Stock 2.0 block @94k miles

Green lines are my original tune 93 octane tune at 21 tapering to 19 and change PSI. (this did not have the AEM Map sensor or the P&L high flow intake)
Blue lines are my new 93 octane tune with 21 psi.
Red line is my new 100 octane 26 psi tune.

I am also very thrilled about is how much faster the car spools up compared to my previous 20g tune. The pulls started a little bit earlier so I don't know the exact amount of difference but you can see it comes on a good bit sooner and Jorge was saying full boost was hitting around 3800-3900 rpms.

Thanks again to the guys at P&L Jorge specifically for a highly enjoyable car.

Oh I doubt that. I don't know about making more power, but to make things more reliable/abusable is in the future

Very nice,...
More info on the P&L intake please...
Perhaps Jorge can chime in and fill us in on the tune details,....
Was the timing any different on the new tune>?(pump)
How much extra power do you think the intake really makes with this setup and do you think the 12 degree cooler temps and less humidity played a factor in the number differences ?

Overall looks like a fun ride

The one I got is the following:
http://www.pandlmotorsports.com/osCo...roducts_id=352
As to whether it can be entirely attributed to the intake or the tune, I can't say for sure, but I can see at least a good chunk being due to the intake. The turbo XS short ram I had has a fairly small (1/2 the length roughly) filter compared to the P&L one. In my mind (please someone chime in if I am wrong) if that filter were what was slowing my spool by taking more effort to pull the same air through, I could see that making a good difference. Not only that, but that small piece of corrugated piping after the intake is gone with the P&L intake which I could see causing funky air flow in the intake.

I'm not concerned with the number differences between my old 93 map and the new 93 map. What I'm exceptionally happy with (in addition to the rest, obviously) is the power coming earlier. I really only asked him to add it so I could see the difference in spool on the same sheet because that seemed to me to be too significant to just be a fluke.

OK well its a BIG MAF,.. that makes sense. The Diameter changed from 2.4 to 3.0 . For some reason last night (half asleep) I was thinking intake manifold lol

What size inlet does your turbo have?

The turbo inlet is 2.4 inch. I originally wasn't planning on pushing the car quite this far (imagine how that works out ) so some things that could have been done (like EWG and larger hot side) weren't.

I hear you,.. I am on a 2.4in inlet PNP 7cm 18G EWG
went 11.96 @ 117 on C16 @ 22psi.
Now considering BIG MAF with the MAP sensor and pushing the tune past 26 to see whats really up

Are you on stock trans?
How did you convince Jorge to push this tune this hot? We all know how conservative he is

No, I have RA gears. I know it's at risk, but I'm not going to be running this tune all THAT frequently and when it goes, it'll be 6 speed time. But that does make the spool all the more impressive to me since the gears are shorter and offer less load.

It's funny you should ask, when I walked in yesterday one of the questions he asked me was "aggressive or conservative" so naturally I tried the middle ground and he said something like "scantrons don't have a fill-in-the-blank" and doing his usual thing that gets me to think about what I'm doing. A little bit later we were on the dyno after the first pull at 360whp (like the 3rd or so 100 octane pull, but the first that hit 360) on 100 octane he turns to me asking "win or wuss, right now we're somewhere in the middle". So I made the decision to pull what my friend called the "boost tampon" out and responded "win." He was actually going to go a bit further than this but the IWG td05 hotside wouldn't let us.

The more I think about it though I'm not sure this tune is all that "hot" in and of itself, it's just that it is in the territory of natural mechanical problems for the transmission and stock block. I don't think 36 whp is a big request from going from 93 octane to 100 octane. (Here is where my ignorance from not being a tuner shows)

I got the same rhetoric from him when he tuned me, unfortunately I had some issues and we stopped @ 315 or so.
I would be willing to bet his timing is conservative for 26psi
I am surprised he didnt give you the lecture about an open deck block and
ovaling of the tops of the cylinders,....lol
Enjoy your ride,... get it to the track so we can see some trap speeds

He did talk to me about ovaling right around a year ago when I got my first 20g tune. I know if I run that map much the block doesn't have much life in it (not that 325 isn't already pushing it ). But my motor is currently in pretty rare condition (0 oil consumption on 4k mile changes, blackstone analysis shows hardly any bearing wear and suggests I start 5k miles immediately, but I'm more than happy to change the oil at 4k and make my bearings uber happy) considering its age and history (242 whp stock turbo for 50k miles, 311 whp for 15k miles) so my driving style/abuse frequency/awesome tunes from Jorge must be pretty tolerable on the engine.

Ever since I started working with P&L I've always had bigger plans than I needed and Jorge keeps reeling me back. I think like a chess player and even though I don't always make the absolute best move I still at least measure all known options to some extent. I'm probably Jorge and Paul's most annoying customer as I forever have a question either relevant to my car currently or plans rolling around my mind.

very nice, I used to have a td05-20g - I think it's the best overall turbo for the wrx on meth or 100oct. Surprisingly responsive yet provides good power!

What are you expecting 1/4 mile time? or have you researched what similar WHP cars do?

I'm not expecting any records to be set. Right now I think I would only slow roll it into first and do marginally quick shifting (completely letting off throttle).

I wouldn't be surprised if I did like 12.5@110 and change or something like that. If I had a 6 speed I'd be more willing to throw down but I'd rather get at least some life out of the RA gears.

That is one of the best qualities of P&L is that they will answer all questions even dumb ones. Good people. congrats on the tune.

No kidding, and thanks .

Last night was time to put some more gas in and I was able to talk myself into getting the 93 octane back in after running 100 for the weekend . We'll see how long that lasts .
