Default Amp Wiring - 2010 WRX

Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone has ran wiring for their amps on a 10 yet? I went to install today but couldn't find anyway into the cabin from under the hood. I know there is a grommet behind the intercooler but I wanted to use that for my boost gauge, egt, and wideband. On my 05 there is a nice hold behind the pedals but not so much on this one...

Anyone know of another spot to run this? I'm installing the amp under my seat, FYI. I don't really want to drill any holes.

Suggestions please!! Need some bass ASAP

Thanks!

Ok cool I'll have to look for that! Now that I think about it while I was under the dash, I don't think I looked left!

I'm performing the surgery if I can't locate something by Saturday!

this is by far the easiest way to run wires into the cabin from the engine bay. basically you follow the hood release cable and you will find the grommet

there are 2 grommets behind the intercooler. 1 to the left and 1 to the right. i ran wiring through the one on the passengers side pretty easily and it comes out right by the floorboard and the front of the center console.

pop the intercooler off, it only takes a couple minutes. Then you'll see them plain as day. Otherwise, they're pretty tough to get access to.

Also, you can modify an existing grommet to add another cable. Us a drill bit to make a hole and then push your line thru, don't drill the hole as big and your cable and it will seal itself.

Hi everyone, I went to begin my amp upgrade in my 09 today and had a difficult time finding a place to get the power wire through...and an even more difficult time finding much information by way of people who have done it before!

First off, if I decide to use one of the grommets to the left or right of the IC discussed above, this is the one to the left of the IC at the center of the photo right? :

If so, how do I get through the foam? Do I need to drill? Does it just take some forcing through?

If it is much easier to go through the wheel well as it sounds like it is, how do I do that? I saw where the hood pop cable goes though a large grommet to the left of the clutch.

Do I need to pop that grommet out and fish the amp power wire from the hood through the fender until I can see it through the hole that the large grommet belongs? Or is there something else?

Hope to hear back, I would love to get this started and completed this month over a couple of weekends. Thanks a ton.

I have a 2009 2.0R, and its basically the same as the 2.5i just that its a smaller engine. I used the grommet on the drivers side (left side), where there are 2 fuel lines already coming out of that grommet, but there is an empty nipple there. I just cut it open with a scissors. The hardest part is getting the wire into the hole and out the other end. I straightened out a wire clothes hanger, and tied the power wire to the leading end to fish the wire down into the cabin area. The wire has to go down, because the foam is there and with some patients it will eventually come out next to the clutch pedal area. Some WD 40 (any type of lubrication) will help.

Is the spot you used in this picture of the drivers side? Are those thicker lines the fuel lines you are referring to? Did you have to just cut into the grommet that those lines already go into?

The grommet is to the left of those lines. That's where I ran my boost gauge wires. I actually ran my amp wire in the drivers side wheel well and into the cabin behind where the factory wires come in for the fuse panel (inside). It was a PITA for sure! I ended up mounting my amp under the drivers seat.

ok, so it sounds like I just need to fish it through the fender, which starts very easily, and then just look for it around the fuse box...which will take some time...but the end result will be worth it.

did anyone fish it through with a coat hanger or just push it manually until it eventually got there?

Alas! After about 3 or 4 hours of patience yesterday, I was finally able to run my 4 gauge power wire through the large grommet to the left of the clutch pedal and up into the fender using a metal wire snake, and then from the grommet under the floor runners all the way back to the trunk of my 09 4 door. It took some time but I was glad to get it done, that was half the subwoofer installation battle.

Having that wire snake was a life saver, I just hooked the claws right onto the ring terminal of the wire and pushed it through. It took some work to get the wire out of the fender because the snake didn't come out in an ideal position but it was visible.

Soon enough I will be rocking out with my Audio Integrations sub box install, can't wait! Tomorrow will be RCA running day. Initially I am just running the Subwoofer RCA from the headunit to the trunk under the floor runners again but on the pssgr side, I will be upgrading and amping the door speakers some time in the spring...but for now my Alpine headunit has a pretty great eq that is making the stock speakers sound decent if you can believe that.

Keep us posted on how running the RCA's goes, I will be doing the same thing soon.

also thinking about adding a amp. after you fed the power wire through the firewall, did you have trouble with getting it to the back? i wasnt finding a clean way to get it to the trunk without pulling up carpet?

You have to pop the runners off on the front sill, they will pop completely off, and then as much as you can of the rear sill runners, part of these go under the seat and I didn't want to find out how they hooked back in if I pulled them completely off. There is a channel large enough for a 4 gauge wire right under the runners.

The center column was not easy at all to run wire through but can be done with patience. I am sure there is a way to remove the center column but the pink clips used did not look readily removable so I battled through the column. A wire snake may help someone with this, but it did not help me, but taping up the ends of wires to make them stiffer helped a lot. Once you get through the center column it isn't as bad. You can continue to run the wire in the channel under the rear runner and to get to the trunk I ran it under the runner and then under the rear seat cushion near the seatbelt base since the wire would still be well hidden, once under the cushion you will be able to find an opening to the trunk, you may have to remove 1 little screw cap to fold over the trunk material so you can see down to where the wire will come out but there are a lot of openings to the trunk.

I also ran the Subwoofer RCA today up the passenger side through the same channel I mentioned for the power wire. I used the high end Monster cable mobile RCA which is as thick as a 4 gauge power wire. I would not have been able to fit more than one thick RCA in the channel so if I do eventually amp the door speakers in the spring, which is my current plan, I think I may have to go under the channel which is still doable, just way more annoying...or I will use more narrow RCAs, probably the better bet...or I may even run the Alpine Ktp-445 amp that hooks through the headunit and factory speaker wiring even though that wouldn't be as awesome as the PDX-5 amp I have waiting in the closet.

WORD OF CAUTION:
I will be purchasing 4 new runners from Subaru next week which I think are around 15 bucks each if the associate got the part right from the description I gave. The clips on these runners are extremely painful to get free especially at the ends of the runners.

The worst ones are the rear runner front clip that fastens into the center column and the front runner front clip that fastens into the kick panel moulding piece in the sides of the foot wells. Those areas of the runners have extremely challenging clips and I was not able to get the runners loose without cracking the rear pssgr side one and breaking probably 2 or 3 male end clips off the runners, all of the female ends under the runners were fine, it would be bad if those were broken because those attach to the carpet...both of the clips on the rear curvy part of the front runners broke on me without any force, I didn't even hear them snap, they just crack right off, the clips in the center of the runners are not bad and will pop off safely with a little force.

I hope this helps.

I only installed 1 power wire and 1 RCA over two days, each time spending about 3 hours working on it...but at least I can look forward to next weekend when I will actually get the sub enclosure and amp installed.

As a followup, once I fed the power wire with the wire snake into the fender, I had to get a screwdriver into the fender from the inside of the engine bay to pull up the snake since it fished the wire through a bit lower than what would have been ideal.

I noticed yesterday that I had some small outward dents on the fender from where the screwdriver was pushing on the inside of the fender when I was trying to grab that snake. The sheetmetal is very soft, so try not to make the same mistake as I did!

It doesn't look all that bad and is very small but it is visible...so if you are anal like me, you will be pretty angry about it if it happens.
