How did you remove the stereo ground from the right bracket?

How does the antenna power cable looks like? I have a horrible radio reception on my new HU, I assume it's because of the antenna power not connected. Anybody have a pic lying around somewhere? =)

Same thing here, I installed the Alpine 9856 and both AM and FM are pretty weak, have been since the day I installed. I have read a few places that said to hook up the power ant. connection (i didnt do that when installing) but the alpine manual says

"Power Antenna Lead (Blue)
Connect this lead to the +B terminal of your power antenna,
if applicable.
• This lead should be used only for controlling the vehicle's power
antenna. Do not use this lead to turn on an amplifier, or a signal
processor, etc."

So I am not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated!

Well, I just took my car back to the shop which installed the audio system for me. I brought a picture of the antenna power cable (there is a thread here somewhere, just search "antenna power"). 5 minutes and it's done. Reception is great.

I would read the responses in this thread again. You have a power antenna, it just happens to be an amplifier, not a motorized unit.

I understood what people were saying and what they were doing to fix their issue but I found it odd that the Alpine manual said to not connect the power ant. cable to an amplifier. I figure i wont break anything so ill give it a shot.

Dude, they mean an audio amplifier, not a powered antenna amplifier They don't want people using the power antenna amplifier as a remote lead that's all.. Connect it and be done...otherwise suffer with poor signal This has been a common known issue for years now. It still amazes me when guys resist doing what everyone here who has an aftermarket unit has already done. Sorry to go on a rant, but this is something that shouldn't be discussed...it just should be done.

Does anyone know if there is a wiring harness for Kenwood Stereos that will connect directly to the Impreza wiring harness?

Or do you have to get a Subaru harness and solder it to the Kenwood harness?

I just stopped at 4 different autoparts stores around town and NONE of them had a Subaru wiring harnesses. The one place had a harness guide and it said they didn't make one for the Impreza. WTF?!

Just go to your "Jack's Super Stereo Installations!!" or whatever local stereo shop you have there. People there usually care about making money and will order whatever harness your heart desires. That's what I did and had a wonderful $70 install with lifetime warranty and all that.

Thanks for the write up. This thread and the webpage explaining the wire harness helped a lot.

I also made the mistake of not hooking up the wire for the antenna booster. I guess it's a common problem.

So I finally found the harness but when I was wrapping up the install I found that my Kenwood HU is too wide for the stereo bezel. WTF?!?

The Face plate on the factory stereo tapers in about a millimeter or two on the sides and top, but the Kenwood unit does not. How do I fix this?

I guess I can either dremel the dash bezel so that it fits but I'm not sure how that's going to come out. Or I can see if the metal fram around the stereo face can be cut out.

I hate stereos.

I just finished an install and instead of an aftermarket pocket I used the Forester DIN pocket with pop up door...see pics...

Use the proper sized bit, in a drill at low speed. It allowed me to press down with full force, and back out the screws. And what does the tag on the pink wire say? (my guess is "mute in")

Pretty sure your picture shows the screws holding the factory radio in the bracket, but I can't tell since I'm at work.

I got ONE of those screws out with a phillips head. ONE.

The other 7 had to be dremmeled to flathead style and muscled out. Those screws were the biggest PITA of my entire radio install.

They're on very tight, and seem to be somewhat seized. I was able to get them out by using a large phillips (larger than a #2 - biggest you can squeeze in there), and pushing down as hard as possible so the screwdriver doesn't lift and strip the bolts. As soon as you crack it, they'll come out no problem. Just takes a bit of muscle to get it going.

I had no problem removing the screws - if I had I would have used the motorcycle impact screw driver which hammers the bit into the screw as it turn it.

I had to buy a "screw out" set from Sears. It was ~$10 and worked just fine for the one screw I stripped completely round.

Yes, many many people have had this same problem. As others suggested, find a phillips screwdriver that exactly fits the screw and keep it tightly pressed into the screw head while you turn it.

[The label on the wire says] "IN INT"
On several Alpine models that is "Audio Interrupt In". It is an input into the radio that mutes the sound when the wire is shorted to ground. Some mobile phones or phone kits have an output that you can connect to this.

Incidentally, you can download the manuals from most radio manufacturers. That's how I checked this wire.

For Alpine, go to http://www.alpinetechcenter.com/ then click on the "Continue without login >>" link.

[ADDED:] And to answer the question, unless you have a phone kit, you should tape off the end of this wire (or use some heat shrink). Save it in case you decide to use it some day.

I have a few battery hookups (yellow wires) for the HU, Ipod adapter, subwoofer (same for ground). Are there any concerns on wiring all of these to the stock harness or should the non-HU connections be wired to the battery directly?

Thanks!
