MY only complaint is if theres one pebble on the highway,, they will find it,,,,!!! and send into your innner fenderwell. This winters been kinda loud with salt and cinders lol

Gonna have to pick the Kumho's over the RE730 since I hear the 730's have a weak sidewall where the Kumho's are extremely stiff (at least in 225/45R16 flavor). If you do buy the Kumho's, make sure you're getting the W-rated ones.

I'm getting the RE730's as well, after having run Dunlop SP8000's for the past 8-9000 miles. Nothing but great reviews... The RE71 is a little cheaper, but is an older tire design...

RE730's have stiff reinfoced sidewalls inorder to accomidate the rim protector lip/edge. They are also Z speed rated too. with AA wet traction rating!

I have the Kuhmo's on my SVX-T and love them, though I would have rathered have gotten the RE730's. Don't get me wrong, I like the Kuhmo's on the SVX-T. I'm going to get the RE730's for the RS when the time comes.

Rajah-I can only get the W rated Kuhmos in the 205/55/15 size and they have treadrating of 340 which is the same as my Dunlop D60's. Does anyone think that a tire with a treadware of 340 is too brittle for auto-x and may "chunk" like my D60's have. Ofcourse my D60's are all-season and havbe a fat sidewall in the 205/60/15 size

According to www.tirerack.com the 205/55/16's are available in both V and W. The funny thing is that the V is $1 more expensive
Don't put any faith in comparing UTOG ratings, they're just about worthless for comparisons. FWIW I decided on RE730s for my next autox season, the Kumho's grip didn't impress me (the sidewalls did though) and they make a lot of noise when above 50% of the limit (i.e. I don't need any more attension from the coppers). Then again I've never tired the 730's before, just going on what I've heard about them. Either way I'm sure you'll be pretty happy, they're both good tires. Tony |

I wouldn't be too worried about a tire being too brittle due to a high treadwear rating. With the advances in tread compound technology, higher and higher treadwear ratings are starting to hit the streets. I have Firehawk SZ50EPs (with a 340 AA A rating) on my Legacy and they are far from brittle. I don't auto-x on them, so I can't say how they'd respond to that abuse, but they hold up perfectly fine during aggressive back road sprints.
The RE71s are certainly dirt cheap now since they're going away, but I wouldn't recommend them if you're looking for good wet traction. I went from 16" SZ50s to 17" RE71s on my Mustang, and there was a noticeable drop in wet weather traction. If you're looking at primarily dry weather, they're a pretty damn good tire. A bit dated, but they have excellent dry grip. I did a couple auto-x events at the end of last season with the Mustang on the RE71s and they held up just fine. Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

Kuhmo 712's vs RE730's vs RE71's
I need some opinions on which tires to get for my OBS. My suspension mods consist of WRX v5 springs, KYB AGX's, F/R endlinks, and a 18MM sway bar. I will be attending 6-8 Auto-x events this year and am looking for a tire that will not break the bank but be fairly sticky in the dry/rain. I would like to get 20K out of the tires if I baby them on the road. I know the perfrect tire, but seriously I would like to hear any thoughts you have on the three tires mentioned. I need a 205/55/15 size so I am somewhat limited in my selection. And I did search through alot of info from previous postings, that what helped me narrow it down.
Thanks, Lonnie |

RE730's:
Here is why. Tread wear ratting of 300+ better dry and wet traction than Re71's. I don't know about the Kuhmo's, but although cheaper, I'm guessing a 150-225 tread wear rating. It's all your decision though. |

Okay back to the top. I know there are some more opinnions out there. Anybody have any info on how long any of the these tires last in the real world. I think I am leaning towards the Kuhmo's, but I am very concerned about the sidewall strength as my current tires (Dunlp D60 205/60/15 OEM size) rollover and die when autocrossed.

Hello,
I have the Kumho's in 205/45/16 size. They do not roll at all. That sidewall is completely stiff. I'm running all 4@35psi. The tire grips to the wet like crazy, I don't hydroplane over water anymore either (at the same speeds I used to hydroplane before with the RE92's). I completely love this tire. It grips very nicely and make the car very predictable. You know ahead of time when the tire will break traction so you can be ready to make any correction inputs. Just my .02 Omar |

Any un-biased opinions out there? I'm going to be making this decision myself in a few months. I'm leaning toward the 730's.

All-in-all they are both just about equal tires. It boils down to two things:
1 - How much do you want to spend. 2 - Who's name do you want on the sidewall. |

Well I too am a 730 fan. I don't think that they are = like Opie said. If you search this whole board you won't find a bad review of the 730. Who ever I have seen a few people complain about the Kumhos. I think your fears of the 730 sidewall being weak is totally unfounded. They have a big rim protectot(which has already saved my rims) and I have autocrossed them with no problems.

Opie, unless I'm misunderstanding you, that's not completely true. If it were, RE92's wouldn't be the same price as RE730's.

I have heard that the Kuhmo's are a good tire for the money, but not the best tire. It wouldn't be my choice.
The two bridgestones are excellent tires. I have owened several sets of the RE71 (among others), and find them to be excellent in the dry and the rain (but don't try them in the snow!). It is nice having such a confidence inspiring rain tire. Since the 730 is an updated version, I would have positive hopes for it. Most driver's don't notice a large difference between the 730 and RE71. The 730 doesn't seem to get much longer tread wear reguardless of what the sidewall says. You are going to get a great bang for the buck with the RE71, with no real compromise. |
