2022 WRX infotainment issues
Not sure if this has been covered under one of the other model-specific sections, but I'm wondering it there are known issues and fixes for the giant tablet interface on the higher trim levels of the 2022 WRX. Mine has a couple of different symptoms that pop up very occasionally that are pretty annoying, but I know I'll never be able to get them to repeat if I bring it in to the dealer for warranty repair. It seems like a number of different Subaru models share the same infotainment system, so maybe there's a larger audience that might have seen these.
The two issues I've seen are: 1) Occasionally (like 3 or 4 times in the 8 months that I've had the car), there is no audio whatsoever when the system boots up. No radio, no sound on phone calls, nothing. Haven't been able to correlate any common conditions when this happens, since it's so infrequent and random. Shutting the car off, waiting 30 seconds and re-starting seems to fix it. But whatever you do, don't shut the car off for only a second or two and re-start to try to re-boot because that makes the system lose its mind. 2) Even less frequently (like twice now that I can remember), the infotainment system is completely black after startup with nothing working -- no home screen, no backup camera, absolutely no display at all. The first time it happened, it stayed that way for my entire 10 minute commute to work. The second time, it came on after maybe 3 or 4 minutes. I was wondering if it was doing some sort of operating system update during that time. Anyone with ideas whether the dealer would know what to do with either of these issues, or if it's just the pitfalls of driving a giant video game with no analog controls?

First thing to try is capacitive discharge. Disconnect the battery. Cycle the ignition (if key start) or hold brake pedal 30 seconds (push button start). Remove keys, close doors, clean battery terminals and reconnect battery. Turn on car - wait 30 seconds or more with key on before starting.
This is the same as restarting your computer or phone. If symptoms persist see dealer to check for latest version of software. Unfortunately before I left Subaru in 2019 the most common resolution for those types symptoms was replacing the head unit if a capacitive discharge or software update didn't resolve. There used to be a diagnostic recorder the dealer can set - you trigger it with the headlight switch when the symptoms occur. The results were sent to Subaru - that always resulted in replacing the head unit anyway so who knows what they do now... |

You can hunt down the ground and sand it it to get a better ground, or just reset it when it acts up, on the infiniti, it was hold in the power knob for 10 seconds (soft hard reset of the infotainment. ) Definitely document it at the dealer so they cant squirrel out of it, get a receipt that says you took it in even though you will get the famous "not able to replicate". Infiniti would just pull and replace the infotainment but again it was pretty well documented (on teh interwebs, for what thats wortg) that this problem persisted even with replacement. So the consensus was to sand down the ground connection, or just reset it every time you encountered issues. |

+1 for ground issue.
On my 05, I used to once in a while have an issue where all the electronics in the car would cut out, but I could turn it back on by power cycling immediately. One day, I had my friends dad take a quick look, and he started at the battery. Sure enough, the ground terminal was loose and arcing. Fixed that and tried to make the couple other grounds nice. I recently got JUST the Sony headunit I put in do the same thing on a trip to Pennsylvania. It only did it twice, and was fine since, so not sure what happened. Thinking of buying the iWIre grounding kit, but $150 is a good chuck of money for four wires and a ground block... |
