Toyota GR Corolla: Automatic Transmission Set For 2024 Release Date

An automatic transmission option could follow two years after the launch of the GR Corolla, which will be manual-only upon initial release

The upcoming Toyota GR Corolla five-door hot hatch will be released this year exclusively with a manual gearbox – but an automatic transmission is expected to follow in 2024.

According to Best Car, an automatic transmission – likely a Toyota-Aisin eight-speed torque converter unit – will follow around two years after the initial release of the GR Corolla, which is expected to launch later in 2022 overseas and early 2023 for Australia.

The updated Toyota GR Yaris three-door hot hatch is expected to also incorporate an automatic transmission option, with both vehicles retaining their signature four-wheel drive systems.

What we know so far about the Toyota GR Corolla

The Toyota Corolla will be the next model in the lineup to receive a full blown GR variant which is expected to make more power and torque than the current GR Yaris.

For reference, the GR Yaris currently produces 200kW/370Nm but these figures could be boosted for the Corolla version. By tuning things such as the exhaust system and engine mapping, Toyota could create quite the monster out of the Corolla.

The GR Corolla could target cars such as the new Volkswagen Golf R that produces 235kW of power and 400Nm of torque, Both cars have all-wheel drive, over 200KW of power and will likely be priced similar to each other.

All-wheel drive will be the pick of drivetrains for the new GR Corolla and will very likely share the same setup as the GR Yaris.

Three modes are likely to be available for the all-wheel drive setup: Normal (60 percent to the rear), Track (70 percent to the rear) and Sport (50:50 split front to rear).

The GR Corolla will also be priced higher than the GR Yaris, so we could be looking at a price somewhere around the $66,990 Golf R hatch here in Australia.

The release date has already been leaked as being October 2022 in the USA, so expect to see the GR Corolla on our shores by the end of the year.

I think that might be the same 8AT that I have in the Tiguan. It's a compact 6AT they shoved two additional gears into so it will hook up to an AWD system. There are two torque ratings for it. If I remember right, the Tiguan has a 380 lb ft rating. So those specs appear to line up with this application if it is in fact the same unit.

I like the gearbox. VW being VW tuned it to upshift and start in a higher gear for better efficiency. . But it's smooth and the shifts under full beans are quick and direct.

Seems odd to go 296 hp and not give us the differentials, but then again there's no way it has 3 diffs and is only $37k. So I'm expecting open front and rear diffs.

That's my thinking too. As excited as I am for the GR Corolla, I've decided that I'm not settling on a car unless it pretty much has everything I want for whatever that car strives to be. Could be a GR Corolla with Circuit Pack. Could be a BRZ tS or GR86 TRD. Could be a manual Supra. Who knows.

Also the GRY doesn’t have 3 diffs man. Torsen front and Torsen rear LSD.

All that dude is doing is speculating. The GR Supra and 86 both have diffs so I have hard time believing the GRC gets boned. If it does, I'll certainly be moving my deposit over to the 86 or Supra.

Honest question: If you can afford a manual Supra with a 6-cylinder, is the GR86 really worth a consideration for you? I could see the argument of putting the Supra money into the GR86, but just curious to know what the pros and cons are for yourself.

Just because someone can afford something doesn't mean someone will buy it. I can afford more car than either but that doesn't mean I'm going to do like most and buy the most car in terms of purchase price that I can. I have other vehicles to insure, maintain, so I haven't come to terms with dropping 50+k yet on a car, any car. I mean I could buy the boat I want for that $ and watercraft insurance is relatively inexpensive compared to cars and bikes. Once you start insuring multiple vehicles, insurance becomes a big thing. It's my last 100% ICE 6MT performance car I'm ever going to buy so in that sense, the Supra is on the table. But I have not been able to get over the fact that I could also just buy a 86 and a Ducati V4 Pan at the same time for that Supra money. Really comes down to insurance premiums. I was going to buy a Pan several years ago but the insurance was nutso on it. I mean almost quadruple what I pay now for my motorcycle policy. But I have switched insurance carriers for my bikes and it's much cheaper now.

So it's complicated. I want to get my boat at some point in the future to partner with my PWC. I'd also like a V4 Pan. And so far I've subscribed to a methodology that I'd rather own multiple things that cost less money compared to very few things that cost a lot more in terms of purchase price. RWD is settling to me as I've told you before, my fun car is for cold winters, hard rain, snow, IE inclement weather. If I'm setting for RWD because of a lack of AWD options, spend less and cut bait or go for it this one time and get the HP/TQ/Performance? Hard decision for me. I just hope I don't have to F with this and get what I want. GRC with Circuit Pack.

Thanks for the feedback. All of that sounds reasonable to me (not that you need my blessing ). If it were my money, I'd get the GR86 as it's easier to work on and a well-known platform. Lots of support and relatively affordable parts. Or expensive parts if that's more your flavor.

I guess only time will tell, though. You might find a deal on something that's too good to pass up.

The 86 even with mods will never be a Supra man. It's a night and day difference with acceleration, handling and braking. The Supra like the M2C is a baby supercar, once you mod them. And I don't think there will be any deals to be had on anything for quite a while. Maybe 2024/2025. RWD is settling though and if I have to settle I'd really like some serious power. Really depends on what they price the 6MT Supra at. The wind buffeting is horrendous, ingress/egress is a bit of a chore too but once you mash the gas out of an apex, suddenly you forget everything else. It's just getting over that price tag for me. If the 6MT was available right now, I'd probably still go 86 in that scenario as $200 monthly sounds a lot better than $500. I'm having a hard time with putting down 20k on a car and still having $500+ payments a month. 86 would be $200 and change. And neither will be able to do what the GRC can do in bad weather.

Meh, less than 10 days to go and we will find out about the Torsens.
