Default No intelligent design in science classes in Michigan

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061011/...igan_science_3

Quote:
LANSING, Mich. - The State Board of Education on Tuesday approved public school curriculum guidelines that support the teaching of evolution in science classes — but not intelligent design.

Intelligent design instruction could be left for other classes in Michigan schools, but it doesn't belong in science class, according to the unanimously adopted guidelines.

"The intent of the board needs to be very clear," said board member John Austin, an Ann Arbor Democrat. "Evolution is not under stress. It is not untested science."

"To suggest intelligent design is a scientific theory is inappropriate because it is not testable. ... It hasn't earned its way into the science classroom," he said.
I'm just happy that with some scholl boards around the country giving in to whining about Intelligent design being science, Michigan isn't.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with actually, like, living in the South? Why not take cheapshots at California where the real religious nuts like ICR are actually based? And feel free to point out all the pro-intelligent design legistlation coming out of the south.

Are you serious, Sam? ICR may be based in CA, but the South has a much higher proportion of fundamentalists and creationists than other parts of the US. I've worked on biology textbooks for the CA market, and evolution has never been an issue there.

But it's an issue in the North and the South, Mike. Here we have Michigan, and a few months ago it was PA. Are you saying that Southerners are stupid? Should we keep pretending that California is some liberal haven free from fundamentalism, even when some very dangerous movements are based there - ID, Holocaust Revisionism - not to mention a slew of cults (the Ayn Rand Institute included), etc? Taking cheap shots at the south is ****ing stupid. Sorry if I take offense to kneejerk, thoughtless remarks like those above but it really doesn't lead to any deeper understanding of what's going on in this country, which I feel we desperately lack.

You mean like:
Kansas:

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) -- At the risk of re-igniting the same heated nationwide debate it sparked six years ago, the Kansas Board of Education approved new public school science standards Tuesday that cast doubt on the theory of evolution.

New Law Allows for Creationism in the Classroom

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- School officials can't prohibit teachers and students from discussing how life began under a new state law signed by Gov. Haley Barbour.

As originally drafted, the measure was designed to foster discussions about the theory of "intelligent design" and flaws with Darwin's explanation of how humans evolved. However, the Legislature expanded it to simply say no limits can be imposed on teachers and students in class talking about "the origin of life."

On June 12, 2006, South Carolina will likely become the fifth state to adopt science standards requiring critical analysis of evolution. Four other states whose science standards require full disclosure of the scientific evidence about evolution include New Mexico, Minnesota, Kansas, and Pennsylvania. Previously Ohio also had standards calling for critical analysis of evolution.
Alabama:

And, let's not forget the home of the Scopes trial, Tennessee.

Not for the things that I'm talking about, it doesn't. A bunch of pot smoking hippies? Okay. Even though that in itself is another stupid and very incorrect stereotype.

Thanks, Banman for proving my point... SC, being the sole "Southern" state (sorry, Kansas is mid-west, I don't care what map you show me) out of 5... Again, characterizing this as being a "the South is a bunch of bible thumping losers ruining it for everyone else" is stupid.

Um, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama usually qualify as "The South", too, don't they?

MI supported evolution. Yes, its an issue outside the South, but much more so in the South.

As for where groups are based, that doesn't prove much. The CATO Intitute is based in DC, one of the least libertarian parts of the country. Nice cheapshot at ARI btw.

And I never said Southerners were stupid. Ignorant maybe (I mean that literally, not insultingly).

Generalizations in general are bad. Not everyone down in the South/Midwest/Southeast is a biblethumping, anti-gay, hate monger. We have plenty of those up here in the Northeast, especially when the issue of gay marriage is brought up on Boston Common. Stereotypes get old fast, just because there are Northeastern liberal elitists doesn't mean everyone up here is.
