It's official, 2011 WRX/STI now on the 7,500 mile oil changer interval
I got a letter from Subaru today with Owner Manual and Warranty & Maintence booklet addendum saying the 2011 WRX/STIs' oil change intervals is 7,500 mile for the 1st and there after oil changes... synthetic required.

Just got mine too. I would have assumed this would have been okay to begin with. I don't do any crazy driving on the WRX so I think 7500 is sufficient for synthetic. Others please chime in and tell us what you think

it states 7500 in ideal conditions, but 3750 in "severe conditions" which is defined by pretty much if you start your car and drive it on a daily basis, i feel that doing your oil change at 3k is cheap insurance, i work at a dealer and turbo motors are very moody to there oil changes or they like to go boom!

I chuckled when I was told about 7500 first oil change. I'll do it my self at 500 miles and again at 1000 miles before I start my 3-4k interval.
When motors break in they usually produce very tiny metal flakes, which i would def not want clogging up oil galleys or causing problems. Every one of my built motors have usually had 75 mile oil change and another at 500 and than have gotten flogged and I have seen zero bearing wear after very hard driving from the ones I have taken apart later on. To each his own though... |

I would still change oil and filter every 3750 mi, and at most at 5000 mi intervals for the WRX. Just because the manual says to change every 7500 mi doesn't mean you shouldn't go above and beyond the recommendation.
Example: My first car, a 2004 Honda Civic Hybrid, said in the manual to change oil (synthetic 0W20) every 10,000 mi/1 year for ideal conditions. So being naive, I stupidly waited 9,000 mi/11 months to do the first oil change. The condition of the oil truly shocked me. Now I always follow the "severe condition" oil change interval for my car and recommend others to do so too. I wish Subaru would put an oil life remaining % indicator in their trip computer; it's been standard on most Honda Civics since 2006! |

Lol, no way in hell I am going to wait 7500 miles to change the oil (especially on the first change)

7500 is too long imo. At 3000 mine is down 1/4 quart and almost black. At 7500 I would be down more than a half quart.

Rotella T5 10w30 every 3k-3500 here, at almost 50k miles. Judging by how the oil looks when I change it at 3500 miles, no way in hell I'd go twice that long....
Also, I don't burn any oil, it is always at full before my changes. |

you guys need to trust in the synthetic and stop thinking it is regular oil. Unless you are autocrossing or tracking your car, you are completely fine following the 7k mile oil change schedule. For those of you that are paranoid and want to change it like its regular oil, feel free but it is just wasted money.

Got the same letter today. First oil change at 3750 or 3 and 3/4 months if you drive in *extreme conditions*
Stop and go traffic on a daily basis constitutes extreme conditions so I'm going with the 3and 3/4 month guideline for mine. Only have 2400 miles but I'm itching to get the factory fill out for some Rotella 5w40. |

Apparently its more enjoyable to throw hands in the air and get all nervy about it then use the solution. Just see if your flavor works at that interval, in your climate, in your engine, the way you usually drive. Simply send in samples. A wealth of engine and oil knowledge.
So ****ing simple. No trust or feelings or speculation needed. |

This has been official since last Novemberish.
It's 2011, we have synthetic oil, we can go longer than 3,750 per change. Heck there's cars that do 10k or 15k intervals. What's the big concern? People have already had UOA's come back from longer intervals and all is well. If you're really super paranoid, get a UOA done at 3,750 and 5,000 and show us the difference between the two. |

This should be interesting. The dealership where I bought my 2011 WRX includes a lifetime of free oil changes (and other things). The interval has been 3,750 I think. For my first change, I asked them what type of oil they use and I was told that it was synthetic blend. We looked at the manual and sure enough, we couldn't find anywhere where it said that synthetic is required so I was actually happy to even get a synthetic blend change for free. Now it sounds like they are changing it over to synthetic so hopefully this will also be included for free! I guess the downside is the 7000 mile interval. Regardless of whether or not this is ok, I will probably just have to do the in between oil change myself.
