Default 93 Legacy Wagon lots of coolant coming out of the tail pipe all over my driveway

LARGE amounts of bright green coolant coming out of the tail pipe. The owner who was on a long freeway trip said she drove until she heard funny noises and white smoke poured out the exhaust. When I asked if she kept an eye on the temperature gauge she said "What's that?"

I was going to start with a leakdown test. Would it be bad to pressure test the coolant system would it force coolant where it doesn't belong?

I have plenty of experience with head work on 02/03 WRX I've never pulled the engine on a NA SOHC with an AT before. I was wondering if I was in for any surprises.

BTW
I searched like crazy
I rather search than start a new thread

thanks
-scott

Um, shouldn't be lots of surprises, but you might have to tear down the whole engine if it was driven with coolant in the oil. You'll have to see how much damage was dealt. Also, I guess STI head gaskets are the way to go as they will apparently never leak.

No need to do a full leak down test, just a regular pressure test will do. Its not the order I would do it in though.

1. check oil, see if there is coolant
2. check coolant, see if there is oil
3. Top off radiator with water, give it a whirl, see if there is air bubbles comming out.
4. perform cylinder pressure test and check for air comming out of radiator. Also listen for any pressure comming out of the pcv.
5. perform radiator pressure test if necessary and listen for pressure comming out of PCV or tail pipe.

Im pretty certain you will have to replace a head gasket, so doing it may not be worth your time- other than to possibly check if you have ring/piston crack, which also may be hard to tell, if the block cracked, and thats why the it was dumping coolant...

So far I have removed the plugs

Plugs from 1,2,4 came out dry
plug out of 3 had water droplets on it

I did leakdown started on 1 and water shot out of the radiator cap

Cylinders 2 & 4 tested fine on the leakdown

As I turned the motor over by hand to find TDC on the compression stroke water shot out of #3 sparkplug hole

Oil level looks good.

THANK YOU very much for your suggestions & help

no problemo.

btw, while your at it, you may want to just use a block to check for trueness of the block and heads...

Since your oil looks good, I personally would take a gamble and say your pistons are ok. Funny thing about hydro lock, its only hydro lock if the water had no where to compress. Since it can leak past the head gasket, it just goes in and out of the coolant system... lol

I have a head shop that the head will go to and get checked out/machined if necessary

I have STi head gaskets but I would think those are for 2.5

this motor says EJ22 so its a 2.2 right?

Thanks -Scott

Not certain, your best bet is to verify with someone else, no experience on the 2.2 other than what I've read hear and there. I believe it was (speaking out of my arse here) very close to the 2.5, so much so that people use it for the 2.2 build ups, with no ill effects. You'll know when you get the head whether the 2.5 gasket gives you enough surface coverage.
