![]() Hey, I've heard lots of different reasons people spun bearings and lots of theories on how to prevent it- but I'm hoping people who've spun a bearing wouldn't mind doing a survey for me- if we get enough responses it would be pretty cool to see what common threads are there!

![]() Looks like a great idea, I would also add if it was a stock block or built, was it forged internals? Maybe also add the company who put the block together?

![]() I added some tick boxes at the last question to try to capture that- with a free survey I'm limited to 10 q's! people could put it in the comments i think. Thanks for the feedback.

![]() Good idea but nothing is concreate. I do have a couple of suggestions. You might want to add 5w-40 oil since that is very popular. Also maybe change the engine mod section. Stage 1, 2, and 3 and reduce alot of those other options. The power levels for example can go.
There are SO many reasons why an engine can fail and so many possibilities as to why and how a spun bearing occures. |

![]() made some changes- I wanted to leave the power levels in there so if people know them they can put them in. I did add stages though, thanks for the suggestions.

![]() As I am unsure of what the stock oil pump is I believe its 11? Ultimately the cause of my issue was determined to be a failed weld at the oil pick up!

![]() ouch. that sounds pretty common out there. I think they were 10mm, then 11mm for the Sti from 08 on and even 12 mm for some JDM engines.

![]() Spun a bearing on my 11 WRX drag racing on a very hot day and about 2700 miles in on my oil change rotella 5w40. I blame the oil and maybe some detonation.

![]() This is great data collection. So far I gathered that majority of bearing failure from those who answered have occurred in those that run 5w30 and a stock oil pickup

![]() based on my own reading over the years i think the stock pickup is a big culprit...to date im doing 5w30 with killer b oil system...so far so good! built motor will be adding larger oil pump as my clearances seem to be on the loose side when i build

I recently purchased a mildly modded '08 STi, pretty much mint runs great, no weird internal noises. Ordered a Moroso pickup tube after reading many cooked engine posts on lots of sites, and a very high percentage of them include a cracked or failed oil tube. For the cost it looks like a must-do. I'm not even going to drive mine any further until it arrives and installed. I'm guessing the brazing process re-tempers the metal tube, and that combined with unsupported free end of the pickup tube vibrating does the damage over time as seen by where many are cracked. Surely not the only reason the engines fail, but looks quite common. |

Good to see they were all above 60k though. Seems cumulative damage could be a factor. Thanks for the post. |

![]() It is interesting isn't it? I wonder how that will look as more results come in.
