https://www.greenoptimistic.com/conv...ower-20130201/ He has a large house up in the hills, so frequent outages. During the CA PG&E random state shutdowns last summer he was on Prius power for 2-3 days. No issues.

![]() I was really interested to get my annual report from the power company, to compare August-December 2020 against 2019, to get an idea of what the Leaf contributed to the bill.
Doing the math in my head before purchasing the car, I was figuring around $45 a month increased cost for adding the car to the grid. The largest jump over 2019 in a single month for that period was 189kWh, which at my local rate of .05226 per comes out to $10. I know there are factors in play that can raise/lower power usage but I was expecting much higher numbers. ![]() |

![]() That's about two cents a mile. Not bad. That also sounds like you're going about 600 miles in a big month.
How are you paying only five cents a kWh? I'm around twice that. |

![]() With peak hour rates factored in, we're paying almost twelve cent per kWh overall. |

![]() 5 cents a kWHr? sigh All the fees and taxes and stuff on my electric bill is double that. Total 20 cents a kWHr. The only upside is I get to calculate a Model S cost per mile and end up where it's more expensive than my Crosstrek per mile.

![]() Georgia Power offers different peak rate plans. One of them is 20.3 cents on-peak (2pm to 7pm on workdays June - September) and 5 cents off-peak, one of them is 9.6 cents on-peak and 1 cent off-peak with an ~$8 / kW demand charge, and we have a "plug-in electric" rate that's 20 cents on-peak, 7 cents off-peak, and 1 cent from 11pm to 7am every night of the year.
That 1-cent "plug-in" rate makes it tempting to put in a Power Wall or similar battery bank, maybe supplemented by a small PV array, that will cover all my summer 2pm-7pm usage, where I can charge it from the grid at night. The energy nerd part of me also wants to bury a giant tank in the back yard and make ice slurry all night, and then run chilled water from a heat exchanger in the tank to the house during summer peak hours. |

![]() That's very similar to the rates here in SC, minus all the extra options.
I would be happy pay that little bit extra if it meant SC had the kind of network Georgia Power has built for charging. Just doing a quick search on Chargepoint, there's 11 DC fast charging stations in the entire state, and none outside of the major cities, and only two are actually on their network. There are five stations on I-20 between Atlanta and Augusta alone. That was the only way I was able to make it home in a reasonable amount of time when I drove it home on "new car day" ![]() I do at least have access the 14 Nissan dealers in the state but if the two here in Columbia are any example, I can't trust them. One location's DC station has been broken for at least the six months I've owned the car and the other blocks their lot at night so their station is only accessible during business hours. ![]() Fellow Bolt owners, this might be of upmost relevance to you if you were also upset by the Bolt Battery Recall:
https://old.reddit.com/r/BoltEV/comm...ted_the_check/ My wife and I took our 2018 Bolt into the Dealership back in November to have the patch installed. We saw about a 35-45 mile decrease in the range post-patch. When that initial "fix" came out I was pretty upset since the #1 reason why we bought the Bolt was the range for the price. My immediate thought was, "what is Chevy going to do for us?" When my wife sent me the above reddit thread my ears perked up immediately. It appears Chevy is giving Bolts owners the following options:
I called the Chevy EV Concierge this morning and they confirmed the buy-back option which we are now in queue (they also offered a loaner car until the fix is released someday, no thanks). I'm expecting a call within the next 48 hours from an escalated department (I assume the same department that handles CA Lemon Law claims). If they offer me a buy-back anywhere near what we owe on the car we're going to do it for financial reasons. Practically, my wife no longer has a long commute and we've been really eyeing a Crosstrek as a more outdoorsy car with AWD and a hitch. We've been very happy with the Bolt for the past couple of years. Wife loved not going to the gas station and the heated steering wheel and seats was a game changer. However, we took it on two road trips in 2019 where we had to really plan our route to catch chargers along the way. Those two trips would not be possible now or would be much more difficult/impractical. |

![]() OK,
great video about the current US grid and EVs Edit, the US grid has experienced larger spikes in demand before. It will be just fine. Last edited by mhoward1; 02-11-2021 at 11:56 AM. |
