Default is dealership screwing me?

the speedometer has been sticking a lot (need to hit the cluster to free it up) so we brought it to the dealer.

the dealer said the whole unit needs to be replaced for around 750, is this reasonable?

also, after searching it sounds like i need to look at a couple connections that may just be loose, any other ideas?

Yes; connections first and especially the ground ones. Well my dealer charged me 53 dollars for a 4 dollar replacement clock so 750 sounds about right. Terribly overpriced I know so try to find one elsewhere if you don't find bad connections.

I would do a little more research on this. When I worked at a Subie dealership, a WRX came in and the tach didn't work. They replaced the tach/speedo gauges inside the cluster. Also the temp gauge in my 96 Legacy was broke and I replaced just the gauge only and problem solved.

What kind of car do you have?

See. $16 for a coolant temp gauge for a 96 Legacy. Prices do vary up to $200 for some gauges, but it's still no $750. So look around on there to see if you can find what you need.
