Default Bmw green lights its 5-Series based Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS)

Quote:
An enormous risk is going to be taken by BMW by when it presses ahead with the opening of the Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS) executive hatch which is a ‘5-series GT’. The contentious BMW PAS is set to be revealed late this year. One senior spokesperson for the company has informed Autocar that the 5-series GT is “one of the bravest designs ever signed off by BMW.”

However, some company insiders say that the car is a ‘modern grand tourer with a luxury cabin and interior flexibility’. The BMW PAS will have a sticker price midway of the BMW 5-series and BMW 7-series and will try to attract drivers who like a higher driving posture but are not eager on full-scale SUVs. One informer has pointed out that BMW is conscious of an ageing population who now find the seat position of typical saloons too low for comfort. For those who have beheld the 5-series GT up front portray the BMW PAS as a ‘tall 7-series hatchback than a low-rise X6‘.

The vehicle is patterned on the most current variant of the large rear-drive platform of BMW, originally witnessed during the lately opened BMW 7-series. Even though the exact measurements are not yet available, the PAS is a little bit lengthier than a 5-series saloon and shorter than a 7-series. Its ride height is a bit higher than a regular street vehicle. The vehicle’s total height is nearly the same as in the middle of a 5-series and an X6, with seating positions higher than regular.

Sources inside the company say this setup enables the PAS to provide identical rear leg space as a new long-wheelbase 7-series. In spite of the sloping roof line, head space is said to be more than sufficient. The passenger area is patterend on the same flowing scheme unveiled in the latest Z4, with a wide console located centrally. Informers say passengers at the front receive a “relaxing, semi-raised position”.

Even though the 5-series GT receives lower body the same as that of a saloon, the roof line and rear hatch are totally X6. The vehicle’s front end has an appearance of a ‘nose cone,’ instead of the lately withdrawn CS concept. It likewise receives doors without frames, although there are no intentions for a convertible follow-up. The smoothly curving roof line slopes into an X6-style ‘fastback’ tailgate. The back part of the car is also said to be similar to the X6, with a lip at the bottom of the hatch window and a flat rear panel below it, in the middle of the rear light clusters. Informants say the tailgate functions in the same way to the Skoda Superb, either as a hatchback or with a saloon-style boot cover.

With the BMW, however, it is the upright back panel that flips up, providing a letter box-shaped aperture. No authoritative details have come out about the 5-series GT’s technical specs, but it is conjectured that most European versions will get a 3.0-liter turbodiesel powerplant and most US vehicles will employ a 3.0-litre turbocharged gasoline powerplant.

Interesting, but I think I'd rather have a 5-series wagon
