I tried removing the original brackets and gave up pretty quick. My kit has been sitting in my car for a couple weeks now because of that. Maybe I'll try some WD40 this weekend and finally get them installed.

Don't give up. The Hellas are worth the hassle.

For what it's worth subimods have PDF files on their product pages for installation. They recommend grounding at the battery. I'm too dumb to really know the difference and won't argue either way. They also recommend zip tying the relay to the bumper support beam. Sorry I would provide a link but I'm writing this in bed on my iPhone.

Man, you weren't kidding. I made every single dog in my neighborhood start barking as soon as I honked the horn once for testing. I'm going to drive somewhere mostly uninhabited to do some "extensive" testing.

Thanks for the guide and the posts, guys. Made it a lot easier to do. I still ended up removing the front bumper because it's just a lot easier to do wiring and leveling the bracket was much less of an ordeal (and less cuts on my arms).

I used lithium grease and did the vicegrip + towel maneuver to get the nuts to loosen up.

If you are tricky with your fingers and your zipties you can attach the relay under the bumper beam without taking off the front bumper!

Just installed mine last night. Think it's better to remove bumper. But not just for the install. At some point you will have to remove it to repair a crack in it. In NJ, way too many steep driveways. I'm not going crazy with repairing it. Just drill hole at end of crack, then plastic epoxy on inside of bumper. Might as well use the install as bumper removal practice

I don't know why people are so hesitant to remove the bumper cover. Makes a lot of work easier, and once you get it off, there's so much more room for activities.

I have been contemplating this mod for a few years now...just haven't been able to convince myself that it's worth it yet. Also, has anyone noticed increased operating temperatures after blocking off about half of the best part of the airflow to the radiator?

Haha just thought I'd throw it out there...I do tend to overthink everything. I think I'll order up a set and try them out since my stock horn is starting to look kinda ratty and fading to some white-ish color.

Recently took off the bumper cover to do the install and now I cant put the cover back on correctly. It wont snap in at the top near the light and the fender. Tried one side at a time with someone holding it and tried with both sides almost on. Just wont snap in. Afraid im going to break the fucgin plastic clips off and then im really fucged.

Make sure its in the slot correctly. And that the tabs on the bumper didn't tear when you removed it.

Any time you work on your own car you take the chance that you'll get yourself into trouble, all part of the learning process. Take it to the dealer if you're stumped, I'm sure an experience tech can pop it back in. Ask him if you can look over his shoulder while he's working if you want to learn something.

Wiring is a lot more complicated than it has to be....

Unplug stock horn, plugs directly into hella horn, run a ground for the other side, done...

The black wiring box that it comes with will eventually stop working, just wait

I thought the Hella's didn't get enough juice with that set-up.

Why would you purchase another one when it works just fine without it?

Hey everyone. Sorry to revive a dying/dead thread. I threw the hellas on yesterday. Followed this tutorial in the first pages, same ground location, same everything... Except I removed my bumper. Made it a bit easier seeing what I was doing in my dark garage.

My ISSUE: The horns don't sound anything close to what I can hear other pairs on youtube sounding like.... (I have VERY good sound for my computer) AND these hellas are honestly best described as "weak". They sound pathetic.
Basically I'm wondering if you guys think I should switch the location of the ground 2 on the battery for a more 'distinct' hella supertone sound?

Thanks In Advance,
DumbBloodyFrustratedMart

Edit: Couldn't wait for advice... Changed the ground to on the battery. Horns work flawlessly.

EVERYONE:
DO NOT GROUND HORNS TO THE FUSE BOX ATTACHMENT LIKE THIS GUIDE SHOWS
USE THE BATTERY.

Just installed my horns on my 14, only thing is I believe one of the stock horns goes off with the Hellas... So it has a weird sound with it. The high pitch of the stock horn under the bumper kinda kills it, is it hard to disconnect it with out removing the bumper?

OP here, you know I might have rubbed the paint a bit to make sure it had a strong contact before mounting the wire to the fuse box screw. Mine are very loud like the youtube videos with it grounded on the fuse box.. but you have me curious now to maybe try the battery tomorrow and see if it is louder... if that is possible.

I went with the battery. They state in the subunits directions, so that's what made my decision. But as far as that stock horn, did you disconnect it or leave it? Cause its high pitch is annoying.

I am having similar issue on my bugeye. I believe its the ground wires not making enough contact. Sometimes they work and when they do one goes out then the other follows right away.

Wired everything correctly. Going to switch the ground to battery tonight if i have time.

I removed the visible stock horn because it would be in the way of the mount. I left the internal horn.. I don't even know where that one is, and figured that maybe since it points a different direction it would be worth keeping for safety.

It is on the passenger side of car under the headlight. Very close to the DRL module.

For those that removed your bumpers, putting it back on correctly will be the biggest pain in the ass. I think the solution many people found was to take a ratchet and start unbolting the piece that attaches to the headlight. As it drops down, it will allow the tabs to slip over properly. Then you will have to re-tighten them and should be good to go.

Also, for anyone running the subimods harness you need to make sure it is wired properly. Apparently they were sending out kits with different relays and when you hooked it up it caused the relay to energize and the horns would still draw power from the factory horn wire.
