04 sti Trans into 08 wrx
Hey everyone.
So I finally came to the point where I got a built motor with supporting mods for the 08 wrx and now it's that time to invest in an sti swap. Just recently someone is getting out of the subie game and what's to get rid of everything. He has a 04 sti 6 speed with everything and r180. Hes a good friend so hes not making money on the deal so I'm getting it for cheap. I've been doing a little research and from what I understand the 04 sti trans has the shortest gears. I'm sitting at around 500whp and was wondering if it would be a good idea to swap in the 04 sti trans or what for a 08+ sti trans with a little bit longer gears?

The big gap between 4th & 5th annoyed me. I eventually had the gears swapped out with a long ratio setup. Love it. Depending on what you do with the car, id say either swap the 5 & 6 for close ratio, or put a full long ratio gear set in it. Or wait for to find a 08+ |

Well of course I do sprinted driving. And with a 6 speed I'd like to take it to the strip every once in a while. But other than that it's my weekend car.

1-4 wasn't to bad. They were great driving through mountain switchbacks.
But that 4-5th. I always seemed to be right in the middle of the two. If you did short, tight autocross type driving you'd like the 1-4. Drag racing you won't like it. Around town is fine, does seem like I shifted a lot more though. The short ratio was better for sliding the car around in gravel or on snow. I have to do it at a slightly higher speed now, and it's not as easy for me to control. |
