Cool JUSTY question!!!

alrighty...

im thinkin about buying an 89 justy automatic as my second car...the problem--i know nothing about justy's....now i know that most subaru engines are interchangeable, but is it possible to swap the early impreza 1.8 liter in for the 1.2 liter justy engine (with few modifications)?

I doubt it, because the Justy isn't really a Subaru

The Justy is really a rebadged Suzuki. About the only thing it shares with other Subarus is its reputation of indestructability

It's an inline-3, you want to swap in a boxer 4. While I really want to say yes, I pretty much have to say no

Actually in the US I belive the Justy was a beast of its own. I do know in the UK for example that the justy was like an AWD suzuki... but from what ive heard the US justy is all subaru.

Generally its going to be hard to swap something into a justy... It would be hard, but I would go with like an EJ18, or an EA81 or something like that. However fitting a flat 4 in there is going to require LOTS of fabrication.

And if the car is an auto... that means its probably the troublesome ECVT, stay away unless you want to convert the car over to 5 speed very soon... those trannys were notorious for problems.
