Default Couple of questions about Catalytic Converters

Got a couple of questions about the cats on my 00 2.5RS

1) What is the manufacturers warranty/responsibility on the emissions control devices

2) my car is throwing code c0420 , I'm pretty sure it is that code, and only that code which when looking it up on Snap-On's scan tool database says that if only this code is received that I should check for exhaust leaks, my car has none, and if none is found check the catalytic converters to see if they are damaged and if so replace the cats.

What constitutes a damaged catalytic converter and how can I visually inspect mine and determine if it/they are damaged?

3) If my cats are in fact damaged can anyone recommend a good inexpensive replacement for it/them

Thanks

Joel

Default In the same boat

I have a silver 2000 2.5RS and got the same code up today too at the dealership. The car is at 113k, so I'm sure I'm beyond any manufacture recourse.

My big dilema is going OEM or doing a performance replacement. I have a Stromung catback system now, and someone replied to my initial post about getting a Stromung cat converter for $349. Best price I can get for the OEM is $457. If the Stromung is similiar in durability, I'd love to save the $100 and get some more performance.

My stromong stainless cat looks 100x more durable than the rusty OEM piece I removed. the only reason not to go OEM is that an aftermarket cat will make your exhaust louder.

Your owners manual will state the warranty for emissions parts (which goes to 80K miles IIRC).
You can get then replaced (within the warranty period) if they break internally or clog.
I doubt you fall into either one of these.

Do you have any engine/exhaust mods? A different header usually pops the P0420 CEL.

Catalytic Converters are covered by the Federal emissions warranty for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles.

If you or someone you know has welding experience you can save quite a bit on a diy project.
www.jegs.com
www.summitracing.com
www.jcwhitney.com
they all sell catalytic converters. Jegs and summit sell exhaust bends. A cat can range anywhere from 54$ to 150$. It's the welding part that most people can't accomplish.

Thanks for the replies guys

I actually dont have any mods but my car is definitely out of the warranty period with 122k on it

Looks like I will be looking into buying an aftermarket cat and installing it
