NEWBIE EJ22 overheat
First I wanna introduce myself my names Levi, this is my first subaru. Been a toyota guy my whole adult life mostly offroad stuff and have always turned to forums for any problems.
1999 Subaru Impreza outback sport EJ22 181k 5spd -Borla catback exhaust otherwise completly stock Known Maintenance done by previous owner: -Replaced Radiator - Thermostat delete mod (SMH I know!) Recent Maintenance done by me -Brand new Aisin Water pump and gates timing belt and associated bearings and what not including a new stant thermostat -Full coolant flush with new additive. The Problem: Ever since i bought the car it has had an overheating issue. -Wont overheat when sitting and idling -Only gets to what I would call 75-80% on the temp gauge but it will flucuate and go back down to normal for random periods of time then back up but never goes all the way up. It takes 20-30 min of HWY driving before it starts to get hot before that it sits right in the normal range. Troubleshooting -No water/coolant in oil -No Oil in coolant -"Block test" came out good so no hydrocarbons in the coolant system if its to be believed i know they are hit and miss. -Coolant goes to expansion reservoir when it gets hot and then after engine cools it draws it back to radiator. my first guess was head gaskets but in all my other experience a blown head gasket would have other indicators and it would get hot and stay hot not fluctuate but I am a newbie to the boxer motors. Any help anyone can provide is greatly appreciated, any cheap troubleshooting to determine root cause would be great if i have to pull the motor and do the HG I will but I dont wanna do it for no reason when it could be something else Im just not familiar with.

Sounds like you have air in the cooling system. Thoroughly burp the sytem with a funnel feeding coolant into the high point in your system. I think you only have the radiator cap in your car and not a high side coolant tank.
I tend to overfill the coolant tank after I do this just in case. Yah, it'll blow coolant all over the place as it gets hot. |

Here's a video I took while burping look like head gasket or is it normal to surge like that when revved. Cause of the water pump surging? Don't mind the ticking type sound it doesn't sound like that in real life.
