Here is an interesting theory about how they can keep the price of the model III so low

Quote:
The battery is a very expensive component of the Tesla models. It is feasible to offer a battery rent option and therefore reduced purchase price of the car itself. Tesla owns the battery and loans it to the Gen3 purchaser for lets say $100 per month perpetually and one can use the swap stations for $30 a fill. The Model III would cost only $25k - $30K with this setup.

I don't see anyone really going for that. Nobody wants to have a car with a vital part that they have to rent like that. Plus, what if you want to stop paying- do they come and repo your battery?

I guess if it meant a $10,000 price reduction some may go for that plan. People lease whole cars.

Hell naw. $100/mo plus $30 for 200mi? For me, that would be $340/mo just in battery management. At least for me, that's a $20k cost over the $30kish it would cost to finance the vehicle at the reduced cost. If I was paying $40k for the car plus interest, add approximately $1900 over 5 yrs (figure $3.50/200 mi chg x 2 per week x 4 weeks x 60), I come out way ahead. Even if my cost/chg is out of whack, I'd have to be off by a factor of 5 to even come close to the same numbers.

40k is the new 30k, so saving money is still on some peoples minds when it comes to EV. No matter how long it will take to break even, they have thought about it. If that does not enter into the equation, then why subject yourself to a car with so many limitations and initial high price.

When buying an EV more than just saving money comes it to play. I would think the allure would be to also use less gasoline, not just to save money but to produce fewer pollutants and to get your energy from local sources. Less environmental impact (not going into the discussion about battery construction).

Tesla is also forecasting 500,000 units for 2017 when their gigafactory partnership with Panasonic goes online.

500,000 will eventually happen I am sure, but not in a year. NO freaking way.
Yes, if people want to think they are 'saving the planet' I suppose that is a reason to buy one as well

I don't drive enough to contribute so for me, the EV is strictly about MONEY! It's cheaper to run. No maintenance compared to ICE, free electricity (for 2 years) at charging stations, and minimal cost to charge at home. 10-15% cost of gasoline when charging at home. All I have to do is rotate the tires for 3 years. I've gone from $200 a month in gas for the 4 wheeler, to $100 (gasoline to diesel), to about $10 a month (electric).

wow a whole 190 bucks a month...and you are stuck with an EV. Bad trade IMO.

I save more than that by dropping cable, and adding nexflix and reading more books.

Depends on where you get your electricity, obviously. I feel OK about the nuclear plant 14mi from my house being greener than burning petroleum.

That said, I know we're going to burn every last drop of oil we can squeeze out of the earth unless something cheaper and easier (ie: miraculous) comes along. I don't have any ridiculous notion that by not burning the fuel myself it won't be burned later on by someone else.

Yeah, being "stuck with an EV" that outruns M5s in the 1/4, has the best safety record of all time, and never has to stop at a gas station must SUUUUUUCK. Losers.

I've personally come to admire Tesla's EV and if they bring a car with enough interior space to fit the family, I'd get it for my wife. Most of her driving is around town and to/from work, which they have designated areas to charge up cars. What's not to win...

Not for 35000 slick..we are not talking about the S (which admitantly I do not like, I think it is plain vanilla ugly)
Best safety record of all time.. What for the 3-4 years the S has been in production. That is like getting a base hit at the first game of the season and bragging about batting a thousand.

The M5 can make runs down the track all day...and then drive home.

The S cannot.

I really love where Tesla is heading and would look long and hard at a car like this for $35-40K range.

That said, the tax man cometh.. And by that I mean that as more and more people move to EV, expect states to move more and more to other ways to tax you than just gasoline. In other words, if you buy an EV to save the planet then great. If you are buying an EV to save money on at the pump, then expect that to change as states charge you based on mileage/useage/weight, etc.

Yes, I remember all of those cars for the first 70 years of automobile production that got 30mpg. Give it time.

Hey that may happen. Then again it may not. All I can talk about is RIGHT Now.

Hondas in the 80's (35 years ago) were getting close to 50 mpg.. but we regulated that away with safety add-ons.

the electric car world is new, and the government is too busy trying to keep the industry alive. Wait until the government starts trying to 'improve' the EV.

I can only imagine what horrors will be instore for the EV car purchaser.

Back on point, if Tesla can make a 35k thousand dollar car, and it can actualy go 225 miles per charge with the radio, GPS and Air conditioning on, then that is a good thing. If people want it, they will buy it. I have no issues with that.

Elon needs to install a battery-swap Supercharger station at Laguna Seca just to screw with Scrappy. (after he deals with that overheating issue, of course)

I try to stay away from Tesla threads due to the Kool-Aid, but can't resist this one, as it is simply not factual.

No Tesla can even come close to an M5 in the 1/4. 0-40 MPH is the only place the Tesla has a chance. I know because I live in the most highly concentrated Tesla area in the world, and have an M5. Even my X5 is faster than the Tesla from a roll.

So anecdotal evidence based on street side uncontrolled environments with untrained personnel and no timing equipment is better than published time with the opposite of all of that. Got it.

Time wise though, it's pretty much a wash between the two.

Ok, Tesla Model S can't outrun your M5 or your X5. You still have to stop at the gas station, don't you?
I can tell you that, given its length/girth/weight, the Model S is deceptively quick. I know a lot of people in the Bay Area are rolling in X5 and there are a fair number of M5 on our roads as well, but that's not everyone. To everyone else, the Model S is significantly quicker than your average Bay Area commuter car.

I just searched and only see my real-world findings confirmed. The M5 traps low-mid 120's and the Tesla traps 110. What am I missing?

Yes, but costs 120K for the P85+. It can't compete in that price range. I have always said I like it - but only at 50% of the price.
