OMGHi2U TXIC, Teach me how to ride a bike.

I'm currently kind of in the process of a lifestyle change. More so just trying to make myself healthier.

Aside from changing up my diet and other such junk, I'm looking into getting into riding my bike as a hobby. I know TXIC has a couple of other cyclists, so I'm kind of curious about some beginner advice, some things to look out for when starting and maybe reccomendations for getting into it.

I took my bike out last night for the first time in years for an easy stroll around the neighborhood and then some... but my bike is way too small for me now. It's a Specialized 415 BMX bike I bought when I was 15. On that note, I have no clue how to ride a geared bike. What kind of things should I be looking into and such when picking up a new bike?

thanks~

Get you a pair of these. Once you get the feeling of balance, you can move on to more advanced tricks, like changing gear.

It's not too small. I have put more miles on my 1984 Haro Freestyle Master then any of my other bikes. The Haro has gone from Friendswood to Galveston and back several times which are 70 mile round trips. Just have fun and just extend your time and distance each time.

most people are best served by a flatbar "road" or "hybrid" bike.

How far are you from Kyle? There is a BMX track there that is supposed to be badass. If you were ever decent on a BMX it will come back faster than you think. I went from not making it around the track more than halfway without feeling like I would die, to dropping the gate and taking a trophy in about 5 weeks. I raced BMX when I was a kid so it was still in there somewhere, burried I guess

The sad thing is, is that I was terrible at BMX, I just wanted a cool bike at the time!

I assume the type of biking I would do would be road biking. What kind of trails and such do people in Houston ride down?

Also, Alan, how long would that usually take you to make it to Galveston? :O

No prb. Riding in the woods is a different kind of fun than pushing yourself on the pavement. It's all pedaling though...

The ghorba link will show you trails in / around Houston that are fun if you are looking to play off road. Being in League City you aren't far from Jack Brooks Park. 6.5 miles of technical trail...lots of fun.

i can ride a bike, with no handle bars

mountain biking is terribly fun, but if you are out of shape, as i am, you get 2 miles before you crash, or simply cannot pedal any further.... when you are rushing downhill on a 5 inchwide trail, dodging boulders and hopping fallen trees... its something else, until you crash at the bottom of it, or realize that there is massive uphill coming up next... hahah

i quit mtn biking and now i road bike, choose wisely between the two, because once you start, you are bound to start spending loads of money.. mostly on a new bike that you like more than the one you are currently riding

You could be different and ride a unicycle.

You can love both - Mountain bikes survive street use, but rarely are road bikes effective in the dirt

This just like any other endeavor in life that poses a rewarding challenge, is best attacked with a positive attitude. To really have fun going fast on a bicycle - in the forest or on the road, one has to enjoy suffering (understanding that it is totally self imposed) - just a little bit. Overcoming it is the fun part

for mtn biking, i hear it's good to start off on a nice easy course, kinda like this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb9bIOrUXtw

anyhow, if you wanna do road biking, just go to a local bike shop. they'll have a group ride you can go with. That's probably the safest way to get comfortable again.
