Too much RTV for oil pan?
I'm installing the oil pan on my new block and I'm not sure if I've used too much RTV. I used Permatex Ultra Black fwiw. I don't want to end up with RTV on the inside and have that clog up the oil pick-up, that's my only real concern at the moment.
Here's a video that might be useful: https://streamable.com/5qpfyu

That is a lot. The safe assumption is that it looks the same on the inside as well. Is this enough to cause alarm.... tough to say, but I'd change it since the engine is new, out, and you have easy access. If this were a 200K mile beater car/engine I might feel differently.

that's a lot
people always over do it with sealants a super thin film will easily fill that space when two surfaces completely touch putting it on like toothpaste just means 98% of it has to be displaced somewhere |

Thanks for the help everyone - I'm going to redo it today. Not looking forward to doing it again for the 3rd time, but it is what it is.

Lol
OP, you could always put on a glove and smear a 1mm layer evenly on the pan surface. That's what I did, I even think I was a little light in some areas and no leaks so far. I got about a 1/8" bead that squished out around my pan when I torqued up the bolts. Just add a tiny bit more in the grooves so it stays even across the top. |

Related question: since I'm redoing the RTV, should I be using Ultra Black or Ultra Grey? I've seen people use both so I'm not sure what is ideal.
Initially I used the Black since Permatex's website showed that it was recommended for oil pans but the Grey didn't mention that it was suitable for oil pan gaskets. EDIT: I removed the oil pan and there was definitely a decent bead of RTV on the inside. Interestingly, it hadn't crossed past the block's mating surface so I think technically it would've been safe, but there was definitely a risk. Glad I removed it. |
