Possible Boost Leak - Location?
My Car is a 2002 WRX as far as engine mods it has a Perrin Upipe, TurboXS TBE with High-Flow Cat, K&N Typhoon Intake. All where installed professionally before I bought the car. It had GFB Hybrid BOV on when I bought it but I removed it and replaced with the stock BPV.
Now the problem is that my car is making a whining noise similar to a supercharger. It is most noticeable under slow to medium acceleration. The whining comes on just as the boost is building and goes away around 0 – 5 psi, although I think it really just the noise of the turbo drowning it out. The only thing I’m confused about is if it’s a boost leak I would think I shouldn’t be hitting target boost but under hard acceleration it doesn’t seem to be a problem. It has some fall off in the higher rpms but I think that’s also been due to the hotter weather we had been having a couple weeks ago. I’ve searched but can’t seem to find anything that would help me figure out where to even start looking. The only thing I could think of is that when I replaced the stock BPV I should have replaced the gasket as well. I’m going to pick one up and see if that helps, if not I’m kind of at a loss.

That gasket might be it. Im not a pro or anything , but a small enough boost leak probably wont affect your peak / target boost that much. I think it all depends how large of a leak it is and where it is actually happening.
Sorry to not be of much help, but Its hard to diagnose these things for me without seeing the car. |

It would be tough even if you where able to look at the car. I've tried multiple times to figure out where ti could be by popping the hood and listening while someone revs the car. I can't hear anything over the noise the rest ofthe engine makes. I think it might be that the engine has to be under load as well which makes it that much harder to locate if it is a leak.

That would make more sense. Im sure theres more noise under load rather than just free reving it.
Anyone else wanna hop in and try to figure this out ? Im just trying to think what else could make a whining noise like that. |
