TD04 diagnosis
I have a TD04 turbo off of an 02 wrx that has about 70K miles on it. Im using the turbo for my EJ18 build but the car isnt running yet and im curious if theres anyway to test it without running it?

eh.. well you can check for shaft play and visually check for damage.. thats all i know how to do.
i once bought a used td04 turbo that was supposedly in great condition and low miles, and it turned out to be blown and leaking coolent etc. its hard to tell, it had no shaft play either so if a seal is blown how to check i dunno. |

well there will naturally be a thin film of oil in the compressor housing from lack of a catch can, but if it wasn't fully drained when he shipped it, it could have possibly come from the drain line. it takes a while to completely empty the turbo of fluids... you could ship it to dead blot or something and have them do the monster TD04 work done to it and they will let you know the shape of the turbo.. if its bad they can also rebuild it...

yea i looked into the deadbolt stuff just before actually but i dont want to spend $400 on a TD04 when the stock one is adequote for my power goals (for now) and I will eventually upgrade to a bigger turbo..
oh well, guess ill have to just wait and see |
