I ended up replacing the caliper pistons since they were corroding and causing my sticking issues. Posted pics before about it.

And Carlson quiet glide clips are fantastic!

Well, I'm bored. Too bad this car is pretty reliable so I have nothing to work on while I'm stuck at home mostly doing nothing.

I know, would be a good time for a project, I might do my pvc that I bought a while ago. I have things I could replace but they are still working fine just starting to make a little noise.

I drive a lot less with my new job so I won’t be thrashing it so much.

For those of you bored Mr. Subaru picked up a crosstrek and he has a video on some common maintenance items.

I think he will do more in the future but it’s nice to see these step by step.

In this video he does PCV, serpentine belt, and a few others like filters.

And he’s a tech so it’s nice knowing he actually knows what he is doing.

+1 saw that, always good to see a FB20 focused video.

but man, he takes forever to get to the point, and he's kind of misleading on his pricing, with him getting a shop discount on dealer parts.

It's rough dealing with the usual; 'you need to buy all your parts from the dealer, so you know it's good. If you don't get Subaru genuine parts at full price, you're a loser who will die when your parts explode from inferior quality'

Yea he does have really long videos. I usually just cut to the part I want to see unless I’m bored.

As for parts I think the biggest thing is that you don’t have to worry about if they are good if you get oem parts. If you get something online it can be hard to tell if it’s good or not so you are taking your chances.

25 minutes doesn't sound too long to me, I've become used to 25-40 minute chemistry/engineering videos so it seems normal to me now.

I will be doing my annual comparison video about fluid film the rust preventative undercoating soon. This is after my 4th winter using it.

If you guys want me to address anything or have questions that you would like to see answered let me know and I’ll try to add them to the video.

Also if you have any pictures of your cars undercarriage (rear diff area) please post them with mileage, number of winter, location and model year of the car.

Thanks!

I suppose you want to avoid car washes that use an undercarriage spray when you use fluid film?

Generally I just try to wash my car by hand on the exceptionally warm days.

oil catch can, imo, with so much free time to do stuff, that's what I did and wow did the tiny one catch a lot of oil, I had to upgrade to a beefier one.

Catch cans aren’t necessary for these engines ( or most ) as long as the pcv system is functioning correctly.

I find myself biking about 10x more than I drive now and I hadn't ridden a bike in many years before this shutdown. Not many places to drive to, nothing to be in a hurry about so taking a while longer to bike places doesn't make any difference. Anyone else barely driving anymore?

I drove like 1 mile to the store for the first time in like 5 weeks, I took it down to another light and back a few times to get it all the way up to temp at least.

Been driving my wife’s grand Cherokee more, I cleaned my car real good and don’t want to take it in the snow or rain ahah.

Also I’m due for an oil change but since I’m not driving at all what’s the point? Once this is over I’ll change it.

Took a good bit of work to get the shifter working on my dad's mountain bike he gave to me to use. The shifter mechanism itself had stale grease in it that made the pawl not latch into the notches on the gear, so gears wouldn't work most of the time. Got that fixed and it wouldn't go into the first gear on the front, or the first 2 or 3 gears on the rear. I knew exactly which screws and cables to play around with to fix it, but it still took a crazy amount of time to get it working right.

Swear it was almost harder to work on than my car, although I've rarely worked on bikes in the past and I've worked on my car probably 50-100 times.

I've been working from home full time over the last few years, so much of the movement of my car sadly was only a couple miles up the road to the neighborhood gym and back during the week. Then the occasional weekend getaway.

Now it barely moves once a week to get groceries. I also try to give it a little more time to warm up and drive a bit further when I can to make it somewhat easier on wear.

Funny, I'm also dealing with a bike problem. The freehub pawls are sticking which makes the pedals slip if I put load on them from a stop. Which can result in a painful whack to my shin. I decided I'm going to do the rebuild myself. I'm already pretty deep into it - cassette and freehub removed from the rear wheel and now I'm waiting on tools and grease.

I drove somewhere today, what an achievement!

Just picked up some fishing line to re-spool the reels to go fishing this weekend (no openers, just catching and releasing for fun). But will probably use a friend's car for that.

I noticed a few of my pulleys has a little bit of wiggle in them is that normal? They all sounded fine when spun and I noticed on a video online they had the same ones have a little wiggle. It was the large one that doesn’t do anything and the two small smooth ones near the middle.

Also while the car was on i noticed the tensioner pulley was a little bouncy is that normal?

Have a little squeal on startup and trying to see what’s going on

My tensioner pulley has always vibrated with the engine on, especially when the AC turns on and off. I think someone once told me it was probably bad and needed to be replaced immediately, but it had always been like that and has been like that for 10s of thousands of miles since. Still spun without any significant resistance when I replaced my serpentine belt, so it's not close to wearing out I don't think.

Finally changed my pcv valve today. The old one was rusty and not making the shake noise very consistently. It was also pretty milky and so was the rubber hose. Don’t think it had been changed since new.

We will see what happens.

I am also going to try and rig up the vdc fuse switch to the existing traction control switch on the panel to keep the OEM look, I’ll see how it works and probably make a video for it.

Any recommendations for a new battery in 2020? Still have the factory one installed in my 15, and last winter I kept thinking "man, I probably should have swapped this" as I was slowly cranking away.

Mines the same, getting on it’s last leg. Not sure how old mine is it’s a 12 so I’m assuming not the original one

Anything at all with a good warranty, plenty of expensive batteries die in a year or less and plenty of cheap batteries are going on 10-15 years in peoples' cars. They seem to have either poor quality control, or just a poor general design of flooded lead acid batteries because it seems to be completely random, you hear great things and terrible things about every single brand and every single battery line. At this point, after I've read so much about all brands being both amazing and terrible, I'll just buy whatever is on the cheap end and has the best warranty, probably a costco or walmart battery for $100 or less. Worst case scenario I have a li-po powered portable jump starter in my car everywhere I go and it just takes me another 90 seconds to get going.

It's good to keep your battery charged whenever possible, by the way, so when you get a new battery it might not be a terrible investment to put one of those quick-connect battery maintainers on and hang the cable out of your grille or something along those lines, then plug it in any time you're planning to leave your car sit parked for more than a day.
