Looking for an alternator cheap or to borrow.
The voltage levels in my car are flipping out. I drove home tonight with uber flickering headlights and I thought for sure the car was just going to die outright.
I've looked over my wiring and everything looks alright so I'd like to try swapping out my alternator. If someone has one or knows of one that I can borrow or purchase cheap please let me know ASAP.

get one of those alternator check lights (should be able to get one at a local napa or autozone). Not very expensive and a lot easier than swapping the alternator right off the bat.

Also some parts stores, I can't remember which ones.(AutoZone?) will hook it up to a machine to test it for free. Doesn't save the work part but does the $$ part if it's fine.

I was under the impression that alternators either worked or didn't. When mine went, it just died, no electrical flashing or anything, just died.
It sounds like you have a live wire grounding out somewhere associated with your ECU or some other piece of aftermarket equipment. My amp cord had a slight fray in it and did similar things to my car... Food for thought, use a meter and see if you have any current running through your grounds.... Bry. |

Also, I just remembered someone telling me they put a lightened pulley kit on the car and they were having similar problems. He had the alternator checked out and the service guy told him it was fine. He put the original pulleys back on and everything was back to normal.

It's not really the alternator so much as the voltage regulator that i think is toast. I'm pretty sure they're one in the same unit.. no?
I pulled the alternator fuse in the fuse box under the hood and got a healthy 14.4. Of course.. the car wasn't displaying the problem at the time so I'm not sure what would happen if I did this while it was wigging out on me. Thanks anyway Pete.. it's always nice to know someone's got yer back. |
