Yup. Geese claims the numbness is a choice. I disagree with him on occasion.. and this is one. EPS lacks feel because it adds a ton of rotational mass to the steering linkage, which dampen all the little vibrations that constitute road feel.

In a few years some manufacturer, like Porsche, will probably engineer a linear motor EPS rack system that will combine all the benefits of non-powered and traditional EPS steering.. and it'll trickle down to cars just in time for consumer-grade Level 5 Autonomous cars to arrive and nobody to care anymore.

And choosing "race" or "sport" mode makes the steering heavier. Although it doesn't create more feel. But yeah, Porsche seems to have the best synthetically real steering.
