1978 Fun Wheels Subaru BRAT Go Kart
This place IS dead, so here is my weak attempt at a resurrection.
Behold! My new-to-me barn find BRAT go kart! Running a 3 hp Briggs 90702 engine, one wheel drive, one wheel brake. All original (maybe not the engine) except for the body mounting hardware and the piece of wood I sit on, since the seller forgot to mention the OG seat was busted... Anyway, this thing is a BLAST and gets thumbs up everywhere it goes! http://s706.photobucket.com/user/soo...AT%20Go%20Kart

Bring it to WCSS! Hmmm do you think you could install a BRAT jump seat as your drivers seat??

I think the BRAT seat might be too tall to clear the body. It's already a bit hard to get into. I was mulling over extending the front of the frame to give myself a bit more leg room (The frame is MUCH shorter than the body). Last edited by car_freak85; 06-21-2016 at 10:22 AM. |

I am hoping that we can get an "other" class this year at WCSS... so this go-kart might fall under that category. (along with Tribecas, Justys, Fuji Rabbits, etc)

Update! I've sourced a Subaru EX21 7 hp engine for the BRAT kart! Now I just need to figure out a remote fuel tank arrangement so I don't have to hack up the body...

Is the tank a gravity feed, or does the carb have a diaphragm pump? Next, you'll be on here complaining of snapping axles or breaking drive chains......LOL..... |

My first inclination would be that it's gravity fed, but there seems to be a good chance that there is a pulse pump mounted below the tank.
Given that the kart is 1-wheel-drive and runs 2-inch wide tires, I'd think the short little axle will be fine. That janky old chain on the other hand... |

She's a two year old Labrador/Whippet mix (we think).

I also own one!
Sorry I cannot produce any pictures for you at the moment but I received one for my 7th birthday ( I just celebrated my 29th birthday) so I have had this thing for quite some time. When my grandparents originally purchased it they paid $1000 for it. I drove the hell out of it for years until the clutch went. Papa and I pulled the body off and fixed the clutch but never put the body back on because I asked for that.. (the mind of a kid) anyways, just thought I'd share that with you guys and hopefully this summer I can get it running and the body back on, only 8 bolts hold the body on the frame.
I have kids now so I'm definitely going to keep it but does anyone have a price range they are worth? I know they only made so many of them and I am pretty sure this one is a particular vin number plus there's paperwork with mine. |

They're worth whatever you can find one for or whatever someone offers you for it.
No idea on production numbers. |

Cool. When I was in high school, my Dad got one of those thrown in with a BRAT or Wagon purchase for my little brother to play with. I put a 5 or 6 HP engine on it. It was great, but went fast enough that the frame broke up front. Had to weld it back together.
BTW, wish I could find a nice late 70s BRAT DL in Yellow (brown interior). That was my first car. Old BRATs are SO hard to find these days in anything other than junkyard condition, and DLs (the base model w/ single round headlights) seem even harder to find. |

They're still around in enough numbers that you can find a decent one. Not many in showroom condition still, but I see them for sale all the time.

I’m in the northeast, I’ve had a hell of a time finding old Gens of any sort. I just Happened upon a 92 Loyale sedan fwd with 40k original miles, next to rust free. Great shape minus rear quarter damage from a rogue in a parking lot. My wife wants a brat. Still haven’t found one in years up here
