Update on the sub - I added more polyfill (it's about 50% lightly stuffed now) and it has also broken in a bit I guess. It sounds pretty good now I think. I probably will go ahead an add the volume/gain knob after all though, because I don't like the idea that the only way to get it sounding like I want is to remove the bass from all of the other speakers as well (i.e. turn the bass way down on the headunit).

-edit2-
Purchased the monoprice volume control P/N 8243 from ebay, $20 shipped. It will be a fun project, and in the end, it is value added to the sub for it's eventual resale. If the volume knob makes the whole thing sound perfect, I will go ahead and carpet the sub as well.

It's almost like the sub is just breaking in. Man, even without the dedicated sub volume knob it sounded perfect tonight off of a USB input. HU Volume knob halfway up had everything perfectly balanced. For those of you wondering if 100W is powerful enough, cranking it up closer to 3/4 had all 3 of my mirrors vibrating lol

Possibly the last update to this thread:

I finally did the comparison between my system and my buddy's 2017 with HK, using the same song, back to back.

His certainly has more power, and sounds slightly better, but it is reasonably comparable. I think with a different headunit or an amplifier for the door speakers the systems would be on par. I did note that when he has his volume cranked (50%) and I'm at 75% for the same level the sound is the same, but his door speakers are doing a lot of work (doors panels vibrating) whereas mine aren't doing much at all, compared to the stock "high efficiency" speakers which would vibrate the door like crazy. The stock speakers can put out much more sound, but they also distort, so there's the trade off. An amp for the door speakers would fix this, and probably improve the sound a lot.

I think I'll just call it a day and be happy with what I've got until I sell my car, unless I stumble across "the perfect head unit", which is very unlikely.

Verdict: it's not as great out of the box as it should be for the price, but if you consider resale value it's still a great option for anyone looking to keep a stock headunit.

You have no idea how great your kicker speakers and sub will sound once you change your head unit and add a amp.

My Pioneer 4200-NEX and Kenwood x801-5 amp will put to shame the Harman Kardon system.

Good to know, I just wish I could find a headunit that had a volume knob, didn't take a year to start up and supported HD radio. Is that too much to ask?

I second that, even if my HU is not that fancy, my JVC M740BT(that i'll be upgrading for different reasons soon...), Kenwood M3004 amp behind the glovebox and underseat kicker sub are miles above my buddies HK system now. I love it.

Took a while to tune it to my likings tho. I think I found a good medium for everything I listen to.

Are you running the full Kicker upgrade kit w/ the above mentioned HU and amp?? I'm just wanting to make sure I'm understanding what you're running correctly, as I'm currently thinking about swapping out my factory HU for the Alpine HU and Alpine KTP-455a amp. Had that setup in my Ram with 2 Type R 12's and loved it, and had thought about installing the full setup in my WRX, but just like the OP said, don't really want to take up my trunk with a big old sub box, so have been thinking about running the Alpine HU with the KTP-455a with the factory speakers for now, and save up for the full Kicker upgrade if I find that this is worth the money.
