Post WRX shifting

Apologies if this has been covered, actually I know it has, but I couldn't find the old thread.

I've driven a stick for 20 years, so I thought I knew what I was doing, but with my new WRX I was starting to think I didn't know how to drive. I was experiencing occasional jerky starts, the clunk from the rear... then almost overnight, with 1500 miles on it, my 5 spd WRX wagon is shifting beautifully - absolutely perfect. It could be me, or it could be some characteristic of breaking in the car - or it could be both.

The car seems to be getting better and better, so much so that I am going to forget about i-club this morning and go for a nice long drive. See you all later!

I noticed the same thing. The biggest difference for me was getting used to the clutch take up. The clutch on the WRX starts just off the floor. The clutch on my '96 Impreza started to take-up about 1/3-1/2 way of the clutch travel.

I got a couple of "clunks" from the rear (usually on hard 1-2 shifts). After 3,800 miles, the whole driveline feels better and I feel more comfortable driving the car harder (no more "clunks").

<FONT COLOR="Green">Mine loosened up nicely at about 1100 miles, but I just installed a Short-Shifter and now it's all stiff again!

I am assured by others that this is normal and my new shifter should break in soon.

If not, the old one is going back in!

Nice try Dan...

It DOES shift a LOT faster, it's just going to take getting used to and the MAN (SCRAPPYDO) assures me that all will be fine.

I had a question regarding the short throw shifters like kartboy and didn't want to start another thread. What makes the shifts actually shorter? Is it just because the actual stick is shorter in length, just giving you the feel that shifting is shorter or is there another mechanism involved? thanks.

The stick is shorter, slightly. The distance from the pivot ball at the bottom to the horizontal pivot bolt is greater than stock. It gives the shifter more travel, throw, but because of this more pressure is required. Its a give and take...

Yeah, the throw is significantly shorter, when I first got it I thought I was still in neutral, but I was already in the next gear. And because of the shorter throw, it's a little harder to shift because you have less leverage, but it's worth it!

..and Dan, it's already loosening up! sorry buddy!

It is shifting smoother and smoother every day (approaching 5Kmiles). I still have not completely melded with the car (pretty close)...sometime I still bog down trying to start fast at lights...I try not to fry the clutch so I don't give it enough gas and when I take the clutch out too fast trying to get a quick jump...Wham! tach shoots down to 1 and I'm driving a Metro for a second and a half!

Not the car's fault...it must get frustrated with me when I do that.

Shifting to a higher gear from a lower gear in my WRX (3300 miles) is very smooth. I believe R&T said "honda like shifting"? My only complaint is shifting into 1st from 2nd is sloppy and inconsistent. Sometimes it feels clean, one smooth motion with almost no resistance. Other times it's several distinct smooth clicks: click 1 - pull shifter all the way left, click 2 - push shifter forward until the synchro engages (I assume that's what's happening), click 3 - mush it all together and release the clutch. I've read a lot about the trannys on these cars and it appears normal, but it's a little annoying and it's taking me a long time to get used to. FTR - I only shift into 1st from 2nd at less than 5mph.
