LOL! I think you misunderstand, it's not about his auction price, but the 13K for a used ej207.

there you go. i got mine from an importer in canada as well. (but they ship to united states addresses from virginia.) also with a 30 day warranty and a start up warranty. the warranties are a good thing considering you can't easily do a conventional compression test on a motor with it out of a car. a leakdown test can be done, so i'd ask them to perform one before shipping out. they probably won't though, or they'll tell you they performed all those tests before pulling the motor, but don't have the results from that motor. that's why a startup/30day warranty is important.

i got mine from J Spec Auto for $3900 with *NO* intercooler, just the motor, harness, accessories, ecu, turbo, and downpipe. i already had the 6 speed in my car before the motor, but i think i paid around 3K for the 6 speed swap.

the last thing i'd mention is that i'd stay away from motors with signs of aftermarket tinkering. things like, aftermarket intercoolers, intercooler hoses, pulleys, a block-off on the bov hose, etc. gauges are ok, depending on which ones. i'd stay away from a motor that had bungs welded in the headers, for example, as that would imply that the motor was tuned. but things like oil pressure, and boost gauges are ok with me. these are pretty stout motors that can be driven hard, but they're sensitive to a clean tune. basically, you're looking for an unmolested version of the motor - same as if you were shopping for a used sti here in the states.

yeah, and i'd also stay away from anyone who bickers with you in the pre-purchase communication stage. you need good communication from someone who you're giving a lot of money too. and especially if you have a warranty issue.

I agree.

The communication went like this. I asked for a leak down test of all the cylinders, and he said he paid 13k for just the motor, so the engine is fine and it doesn't need a leak down test. Also, he's not going to provide one. Then i said, a regular used EJ207 never sells for anywhere near 13k. That's when he hangs up on me.

Would you have confidence in giving this shop/vendor $5,999 plus shipping for that motor and trans?

I have the Tomei 256/264 cams in my v7 heads. The car is not tuned yet (hopefully within the next week or so) so I can't give a full impression yet but I will post back afterwords though.

Well, I don't know if I'll be able to give you the comparison you're looking for then because I went from stock ej205 heads to v7 heads and the Tomei cams at the same time. From talking to one highly knowledgeable engine builder he doesn't feel these are that much larger than the stock ones. We will see how it turns out - the turbo is an HTA Green so it should be a decently quick and fun ride.

Randy,

Have you talked to local tuning vendors such as DSG and EFI? I know EFI has my map and could tweak it for your setup. The main issue with your swap is the stock motor's timing, which is based on RON 100+. Worst case scenario is you drive your car absolutely out of boost to a tuner for a proper tune. I'd recommend my tuner but I don't know if he is tuning on a regular basis anymore.

Gerald.

I plan on having my final at EFI. I need something for the 2.5 weeks before the tune and the 236 mile drive to EFI.

It's cheaper than towing.

get in touch with Clark Turner. he seems to be the authority on the ej207. he can definitely send you a tune that'll get you to your tuner.

I traded emails with him earlier in the week but he seems to have dropped off. Install day is Saturday.

I have searched everywhere on this site and everywhere else trying to figure this out any help or ideas would be awesome cause i'm fresh out and this is the only thing in my way sadly of having a running car.

The oil reccomendation chart looked similar to the USDM, but there was language (which I did not translate) that sat next to "10W50".
Thanks for this post! I'll set it up for 0.7 mm; a happy medium between what I've been running and what Clark recommends.

Glad to help. I got a bit of help yesterday, because I could only read numbers off that material.

The timing belt replacement interval is at 100 000 Km, making it 62 000 Miles.

That's weird why so soon on the EJ207? The EJ205 says to change at 105K miles. I'm guessing the belt and pulleys only needs to be replaced, not the water pump?

I'm also on the Type RA forum, which I think is UK based. There it's common knowledge that the belt is replaced every 62k miles.

I recall from a Lotus Forum that Lotus had to meet a regulation when selling cars here in US that the timing belt must not need to be replaced more often than 100 k miles. They could not do that, so the owners of Lotus Esprit got free belt replacements by the dealers upto 100 k miles.

With this in mind, I went to see what differs between the US and JDM assemblies, knowing that the JDM revs more and the US lasts longer.

So I found all the parts in the timing belt assemblies. The part numbers for my 05 spec C match 05 US WRX part numbers, except:
The water pump has the same part number with 08+ GR body style WRX, not Sti.
The reason here is that my spec C comes with no oil cooler, but radiator, therefore you need a pump without the third water outlet, that goes to the cooler. The 08+ WRX came with no cooler.

So, the only thing left and the only thing different in part number is the belt itself. The JDM belt has a different part number than anything sold in US. But the translation that japanparts has is timing belt and label.

In the Spec C owners manual (in Japanese), there is the drawing of a car and two little arrows. One pointing at the timing belt area and one pointing to a small label on the underside of the hood.

Now, if this were to be considered by Subaru a "Timing belt and Label Kit",you could possibly just have the same old timing belt like in US, add a replacement mileage label and then change the part number, confusing everyone.
But when I spoke to a friend that is parts manager at the dealer, he told me that Subaru part kits always begin part numbers with X.
This does not begin with X, so it is not a kit.

Then I went to look at the Sti pink timing belt. This has the same part number for all EJ207 and 257.
But, some of the sites that sell to the US, give the replacement warning to replace this every 60 K miles.
So, I've asked about this and got an answer that "it's a good idea to replace the pink belt at 60K".

My theory, after all this:

There is an "OEM softer" belt, for US that lasts longer, possibly meeting US timing belt regulations.
There's an "OEM hard" belt for JDM and Sti pink for US that possibly supports higer RPM better, but gets replaced more often.

hmmm....what makes it even tougher for those of use with swaps, is when an engine is sent to you from canada or where ever, it may look mint but there is just no way of knowing how many miles are on it. I've driven close to 15k on mine, its from an 03 jdm sti...so in theory it could already have at least 60k. Could have a lot more, my wrx is an 03 and i've put 127k on the body. Who knows what sort of commute the original owner of my motor had.
